Nick, that\'s a pretty tall order - some modellers struggle with this for years - good skintones are hard, don\'t let anyone tell you different - and on large-scale stuff it\'s a hell of a lot more difficult to get good results than it is on a mini.

Also there\'s airbrush/no airbrush?

And style:
zenithal lighting:
ultra-real colouring or stylised in one of four or five different ways;
low or high contrast;
all matt or with realistic finishes (glossy skin on the nose/forehead, shiny eyes)?

If you really like the bust and you want to do the best job on him that you can I\'d recommend practicing on something else first if that\'s possible.

See that\'s part of the problem, recommendations so often centre on specific paints from specific makers but the general advice is a much better starting point - caucasian skin is basically orange/scarlet in hue, lightened with white and dulled down slightly (how much is dependant on taste). Then you practice.

Even if you followed written advice to the letter, using the same paints exactly as recommended, it\'s quite possible to end up with results that don\'t look the same because how you lay the paint down in detail can be critical to the final colouring.

If I were you I\'d buy a cheap bust in the same scale to practise.
Don\'t do your first attempt at such a scale on an OOP mini arrrrg!:drool:

Well near the low end of the Aztek range is the 1000S, which is a single-action brush but uses the same nozzles as their high-end ones. This kind of airbrush is good enough for work of this kind and it used to be only about £20 (it\'s been discontinued now but you may still be able to find one).

Unfortunately the expensive part of airbrushing is the air supply, since a compressor is really required if you don\'t want to keep on buying can after can of propellant.

I sometimes use what\'s on hand to some extent (using a bit of this and that already on the palette for shadows etc.) but my full palette of choice for caucasian skin is:
Titanium White
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Red Light
Cerulean Blue
Burnt Umber
a black (doesn\'t really matter which)
Chromium Oxide Green

My basic mixtures are various proportions of the white, ochre, cad red and blue (with little or no blue in the highlights). I use the umber, black and green in the darks.

I use a bit of glazing on top of this sometimes, using primarily a crimson/rose and a little Raw Sienna (or something similar).
