How to paint checkered armour?

Hey there...I was just wondering how people paint checkered armour...I would think that it would be drawn out first with a pencil or fine pen and then freehanded over it, but who knows? I am sure there is someone even more resourceful than my self out there.

Do it first in fine mechanical pencil (you know, the Drafts-man ones).

Then block out with paint diluted with ink.

Pretty much right there ZMB. I do find however, the architects pens and ink have a tendancy to streak or smear when the washes are put down if they\'re not sprayed wit ha fixative first (dulcote, etc.)

Mixing this with paint, or using a watered down black paint, usually keeps this from happening without the fixative though.

Practice this a few times before you use the technique on something valueable/spendy though - it can be tricky sometimes.

Good luck!

I\'d never thought of pencilling it in first, doh!

I tend to create a grid using a brush, but with paint severly watered down as then any slight wobbles dissapear when you start fleshing out. It also gives decent practice for going back and blacklining once complete.

However, I\'ve recently been having trouble on some heavily flowing robes in getting the grid to work, so I\'ve been painting individual squares and I\'ve found that an easier way of sticking to irregular surfaces, even if it does take bloomin ages!
