How to paint obsidian

Hi,

I\'m facing a little Problem while painting my \"King in Yellow\" of the Cthulhu-line by RAFM.
I have designed the base as the top of a long stair in Carcose. Now the Problem: The stairs should represent large blocks of obsidian. But how to paint this ?

I tried to paint it black and add a fine lining in white, but it doesn\'t look right.
Since I saw the Orthanc-Diorama in the new WD I\'m thinking to leave it black and give it just a glossy finish.

Any other ideas ?

You can try using a retardant, which makes the paint dry slower, that way you can mix it with your black, then take white en trace line through the black. Not sure if it will work. I\'ve been wanting to try this myself, but just didn\'t get round of actually doing it yet.

Hmmm, that\'s the way I would paint marble. But obsidian has AFAIK no lines in the stone (correct me if i\'m wrong). I think polished obsidian is more like black glass.
And when I lined the edges of the stones, I let it fade to black. I also tried gem-technics to get al glass-like finish. But this was even worse.

If you can, try texturing the edges with an xacto. IIRC, obsidian is volcanic glass and chips if you sneeze at it, and every piece I\'ve seen has sharp and jagged chunks on the edges. The gloss idea is probably the most workable finish for it.

Ever thought of trying a snowflake obsidian? Same general black gloss (a little duller than regular obsidian) but with white crystallizations running in it like snowflakes.

That is a brilliant idea! I wish I had thought of it. (Never mind, I willlol)

I used snowflake obsidian effects on the weapons of some of my Saurus. What I did was just paint it black, then use an old knackered dry brush dipped in white paint, dabbed off the excess then dabbed it on over the black in places. Then once dry, just gloss varnish over it and its a passable snowflake obsidian. You might want to try using a dark blue or purple ink wash over the black first to give it a bit of depth as well.
