How to paint Space Marines. Please tell me no one will actually buy this...

You guys recognize these books?

I have both of them. I had gotten into the hobby pretty much just when the first of them came out. They were a little expensive (everyone take a Drink!) but I\'m glad I have them. Now though get this; they\'re making another one of these blue books. And this new book will be called \"How to paint SPACEMARINES\". JUST Space marines.

Would someone please tell me what GW is thinking (yeah, yeah, everyone take another drink)? What is anybody gonna find in this book that they couldn\'t find in here?

A book that already costs $40 in Canada, I might add.

We need this book to fail, badly. I know it\'s nigh impossible but we got to nip this in the bud or instead of getting books on how to paint all kinds of citadel minis or how to make all kinds of terrain they\'ll start charging $40 on books such as \"How to paint orcs and goblins\" or \"How to make hills\"

Spread the word people. Do whatever it takes to stop this book from selling. Burn people who consider buying this book for a moment at the stake as an example. Train squigs to devour these books and let them loose in the store. Heck, if you\'re american, try to talk \"Dubya\" into beliving GW has Iraq\'s WMDs and that the only option is declaring them \"Exterminatus\" (I doubt THAT would be hard). But please, we gotta do something.

Well, I think its going to show squad markings and the like. I was certainly thinking about getting it, could be a useful resource.

I don\'t see why its such a problem though, you need to use diffferent techniques for marines than orcs :)

Don\'t the Codexes cover this stuff?

Yeah they do. They put all of the background information to the back to tell you how to paint a miniature. I was thinking painting guides should be for White Dwarf.

nope, not in alot of detail... for detailed information the Insignia Astartes book is alot better... i bought IA ...err.. for my son!...it\'s alotta fluff and not really worth the 250 danish kroner price...

this new tome probably has squad/company marking info, along w/ painting schemes for the different chapters, etc...might be useful, might not..

I guess there won\'t be anymore articles on the matter in WD anymore, or for free at the GW site on the net.

Damn, it\'s too early in the morning for a drink...

have you seen the quality (or lack thereof ) in the White Dwarf Painting guides lately.
I\'ve seen 14 year olds in my local store with better painting skills, than was shown on the \"Scourging of the Shire\" article.

The term \"Downhill Fast\" is springing to mind.

But you forget that people WANT this stuff. It\'s a hobby and people like the pages that shine and smell so nice. On this site you\'ll find a lot of people who maybe don\'t need to look at books, but the flipside is that a lot more people need the help and really fancy getting their hands on the book either way. I like glossy new books :).

True, but there are other solutions. Cry Havoc is a lot more interesting and is wonderfully explained. They cover advanced painting technics, conversions, and creating terrains. Who would want more?

Why would finn want so many miniatures if he doesn\'t paint? I\'m sure he won\'t mind me using the example, but my understanding is he lives in a house made of miniatures stacked on top of each other :). By his own admission he doesn\'t bother painting yet he seems to buy more and more...because he can lol. People will do the same to look at pretty pictures with this book. Simple lol.

The painting guides seem to be reaching for the average gamer nowadays.. and written by gamers as well. But not all things are bad, I saw a good space marine converting guide I think it was in issue 301. I just wished they showed articles that could make aspiring painters to find inspiration. I know I looked at the best worked they had when I started. That was what kept me painting.

The masterclass articles that still exist seem to be in the fanatic magazine They have PDF\'s avaible on their site, for free.

But have WD UK ever published articles that can match the best painting articles we have here on cmon and the rest of the net? I\'m right now diving into the \"slate bases\" article by Allison Mcvey. Great stuff.

Avelorn, there was a golden age of mini painting articles and Eavy Metal used to be the dog\'s bollocks. Alas, times change! Shame really. I cut my old WDs up into articles a long time ago and ruined them, but I\'ve got stuff going back to circa WD 90 or so and some of the stuff John Blanche used to put in there was COOL! I sound like a fan boy lol.

well first you sneak up on the little bugger.

then when you get close enough....CRIKEY! he\'s got a flamethrower.

BLAT BLAT BLAT BLAT. :flame:

i think they are very desperate. UNLESS it actually shows in depth painting. not the little attempts at it they do now with missing steps.

what can you find in it that you cant find here? or anywhere else on the web, FOR FREE!

(yes i am a cheap bastage. cause i am a po one.)

You dont really need it to fail... just because it has been released doesnt mean you have to buy it!

If I look abck to when I was first starting with the hobby and I was painting my old Mole Mortar and Space Marine Landspeeder set, a book like this would have been wonderful! I remember looking in Rogue Trader to try and work out which colours to use and what markings to put on the helmet of my marines and taking great pleasure in doing so. A book full of painted minis would have made that even more fun!

CMON didnt exist, but to large numbers of people it still doesnt. These resource books add a lot to the hobby and encourage people to paint.

If you dont like them then dont buy them, but I think trying to get them to fail is misplaced energy.

This looks like it could very easily turn into a nostalgia thread:D

Hopefully GW can finally settle on a standard scheme for their minis - like \"His Holiness\" I have stacks of old WDs and still have my Space Crusade minis painted up with yellow right arms. I also have some World Eaters with green detailslol both based on WD articles.

Presumably the new book will follow the Insignia book?

The Space Marines have just had a huge makeover, with a corresponding renewed interest. Insignia have been changed, the chapters have developed more fluff, etc. etc. Frankly, GW needed to add some easily referenced material, and how to use it, to their new babies. More than that, I can say nothing except what Avicenna said with perfect clarity.

I won\'t be buying it however, mainly because I cannot stand space marines. If I went back to 40K, I\'d be a \'nid kinda guy/

its funny how the painting gets better and better while the artictles and coverage in the No1 print magazine (WD) gets worse and worse
i believe that\'s just due to the incredible quality of this site and if i see anyone ranting about \"the admins that left us\" again i will track him down and slap him with his own arm after i ripped it off
... :D

The new book should be a nice resorce for all that chapter marking and fluff stuff they they have been lacking in all the new books which was cut to lower the price of the books for the gamers who then yelled at them for the smaller books:)

Just because you don\'t like it, doesn\'t mean you should work to make it fail that makes me want to buy one on it\'s own!
A book like that is geared toward people who may ive out in the boonies with no closely accessable GW and may not have any friends into this sort of thing to tell them about awesome sites like this. Does that mean they deserve to get frustrated and give up on painting? I remember what it was like to try to teach myself how to paint it was hard until I had someone else to talk to and get decent feed back. but the big difference between \"how to paint Citadel Minis\" and \"How to paint space marines\" is the perception the first book is a little intimidating for kids whereas the second book simply states \"how to paint Space Marines\" most kids get into marine because they hear they\'re the best and then have no idea where to go from there.
