How to paint Space Marines. Please tell me no one will actually buy this...

I buy GW stuff...yes, Space Marines...and the books that go with the, too. I\'ll look at this book and maybe even buy it, too. Who knows what fun stuff may be inside.

Fact is, though,if I buy, itll be more for the fluff and pics of wonderful SM models than the painting guide. There are more than likely better tutorials out there and many of them won\'t cost me 250 Danish kroner.

Reading? yeah, I\'ll go with you there, (Happy Birthday, by the way!, congrats w/ the 29!) I\'ll do anything to get my 10 year old to read more, even if that anything costs me an arm and a leg.

I just hope GW gives us vvalue for the money and not half-baked paint tips and rehashed fluff.

Perhaps we are forgetting a primary thing here, Games Workshop is a business and not operating as a charity or a hobby. Their business is selling Toy Soldiers and all the paraphernalia that goes with it.

If people going into GW stores are looking for top class painting help, that is very few and far between. There are very few high class painters as are seen here on CMON in GW stores, in fact most of the staff are trained in the fast 1-2-3 painting style.
GW store staff are retail personnel, and other than being shown how to Basecoat/ Highlight & Last Highlight, are not expected to be Studio quality painters.

Personally after having looked at the Eldar Collectors guide and the poor demonstrations of Harlequin armies therein I doubt, that the book will be of the standard we see on here. But it may be of help to others, who do not have access to CMON.

sounds to me they ARE trying to operate a hobby. or use whicgever view at the time they can muster that will appease the people that they are upsetting most. (the stockholders and retailers. they dont give a tinkers damn about the players.)

Hey, I just realised that GW probably couldn\'t give a monkey\'s twiddle about me because I spend less than £20 a year in their shops. In fact, I bet they hate me . Funny thing is I still rate them as my favourite mini-maker (in the past at least). I just ebay my way through life now lol.

Bring back the old Fantasy Miniatures books! They could release one annually with the cream of the worlds GD\'s in, and have some painting guides in the back. Proper technique based guides - layering, feathering, wet/drybrushing, basing, sculpting. In fact much like the FREE articles section here on CMON!

I\'d pay a good twenty quid for that sort of eye candy, and it\'s certainly a better advert for their minis than the shite painting guides they have knocked out recently (last year or two...) in WD...

They\'d get all the mini pics for FA too....

wouldn\'t be too hard. They could require with entry into GD that you give them the right to photograph and include the photos in said book. GW is a UK company, and Europe (we americans consider UK part of Europe) has pretty strict copyrights, and I suppose they already include something allowing them to include such photos in WD.

@vincegamer : it\'s already the case. Whether you win or not, when presenting a mini at a GD, you are permitting GW to use your imagery in whatever publishing they choose (read the fine print in the GD rules ).

I\'d definately pay for a nice GW annual of the best of the GD\'s for that year, there are how many, 8-10 worldwide? A chapter on each competition would fill quite a few pages I imagine and make quite a handsome book.

It hardly surprises me that GW is taking this route. I also won\'t be surprised when the book (and later books, too) sell quite well. Nor will I be surprised in 6 months when they release an updated version of said book, to include new \"Chapter Approved\" stuff.

You might - but I bet there wouldn\'t be enough demand for GW to publish such a book - the CMON 2003 annual is still being advertised and that was a limited print run of 1000.

Si, the difference there though is that you need to be a member of the site here to get the annual (I think) as it\'s through the CMON shop. We\'re talking about the BIG picture here and all the real GW customers who give their tithe every month. That\'s a whole lot of people lol. The very fact it would have GW and GD stamped all over it is enough for untold thousands. Swarms of them!

Hum ... am I the only one to remember that GW came out with a book on GD winners a year or two ago? They\'re still selling it online. And they\'ve done this many times before.

A book with assorted Masterpieces from a couple of years (like the one they sell at the moment) do bring in a lot of cash but don\'t cut in on their business otherwise.
Now a book that shows the best of all GD\'s of the year (for about the price of a GD ticket) would just about kill off, say... 25-50% of their GD ticket sales (I daresay), as the GD entries are about the only thing that makes a good part of the customers go at all. Or so I think... well, can\'t be the no-discount shopping-spree or the ... well... lets see... oh, yes, the TOTALLY overpopulated con centres...
That being said, I realize I\'m ranting... off for a drink, me...

I\'ll concede the point to you

It surprises me how often this anti GW topic gets aired. As has been said if you don\'t like them don\'t buy the product!

As far as GW going belly up is concerned I doubt it would matter too much to any one who posts here as they will be well aware of the wide range of alternatives available.

Where GW is important is in drawing in new people through their shops and through White Dwarf. Some of these people will have a brief afair with the little metal men and then go on to other things - others will stay and we have next years crop of Erics, Tammys etc to thrill us with their art.

If you ever get the chance to go to a show like the Model Engineering Show or even to a local model railway club open day have a good look at the participants and estimate the average age invlved - the vast majority will be funding their hobby from their pension

Even Wiccanpony and myself have a few years to go before thatlol

This hobby is still vital and alive because it brings in new, young people and GW has a big impact here - like it or not!
