How to paint this ? (pic inside)

Hiya\'s , I was wondering on how to paint this type of effect , it is NMM on a sword , but its the way it is faded in from top to bottom , an example I was just looking at is here http://www.coolminiornot.com/?id=46002 the bottom right photograph is the best example , see how it fades in from the white to the grey , that is the technique I am looking to try , could anyone give me any pointers . Cheers :)

patience, skill and hard work...

it can either be done through wet-on-wet blending (but that\'s tough but quicker), or really patient layering...thin layers followed by thin layers of different shades...then you get the effect you desire.
