How to pour resin with an open side?

I have tried two part epoxy resin for water affects into contained spaces, but I want to try an open space much like this:

What kind of material or rig does one use to create hold the epoxy in as it dries?

I know wax paper will create a slight cloudy finish.

Photocopy acetate works well for making dams for two part resin, it peals off like a sticker once it's cured. You will need to brace it with card or board to stop it deforming from the weight of resin. You can coat it with vasoline with a soft brush to help it lift. You can also block the edges with either PVA (white glue, well dried) or Woodland scenics 'water effects.' It will stop any potential pure aways, resin will find the tiniest hole imaginable and form a sold pool under your piece.

Leave it to cure longer than you think, it will still change shape up to 24 hrs after first pour. So you can get some weird effects.

There's a few uses of clear epoxy resin in my gallery if you want to have a look.

for round stuff i cut out a section of a round bottle to the size and tape it round nice and tight, then along the edges of where the water is use 2 part epoxy glue to make a water tight seal between the base and the bottle wait for it to dry then fill it up with clear resin. Once its dry you just pull off the plastic

Awesome advice here guys. Plenty of options to do some test pieces.
Many thanks.

May try something like this with my current project. Anyone recall a very fine masterpiece shown here a long time ago of a horseman riding through the water. It had a great water base too. Was it Goatman?? Will keep searching for it...

Yeah, it was Goatman; here it is:

I love this piece, even though I'm a bit undecided about the vertical edges of the base..
