How to promote a website

Anyone know how to promote a website ?

Hi,

I am currently putting the finishing touches to my online store (selling various unpainted minis and gaming accessories) and realise that I need to advertise it, the problem is I have no idea how to start.

Has anyone on here had much experience with getting your website known, if so is there any chance you could give me a few pointers to get started ?

I have not included a link to my site as I didn't want to break any rules, I hope this is ok.

Thanks for looking. :)

Word of mouth and quality customer service will build you more customers and repeat customers than anything.

That's a biggie right there. I don't know anything about advertising or promoting a business, but I do know that if people are talking about how great a company is, especially in regards to customer service and satisfaction, then I'll definitely give them a look.

Once you get the word out a little, make a name for yourself for answering emails quickly, shipping quickly, and resolving problems to the advantage of the customer (quickly).

I know it sounds a bit like "do a good job" advice, but problems in those three areas seem to be the most common reputation problems that online gaming businesses have. Lick those, and word of mouth will do wonders for advertising your site.

As for more proactive advertising, see if you can't get a table at a local convention, or drop some literature there if a exhibitor's table isn't feasible.

Word of mouth is indeed the best way of doing it - one site I created last year received no publication other than that and has brought in a six figure income in a year.

However a couple of tips: make sure your website is optimised for google, meta tags, complies with w3c standards, the usual stuff. Next up - Google Merchant Centre - register all your products for free :)

communication is one of the most important. often people understand if there are delays or mistakes, as long as they are kept in the loop

Thank you all for the advice, I shall look into the banner on CMON when the website is finished and shall take onboard what has been said about providing a good, reliable service.

As far as getting myself onto the search engines Google, Yahoo etc.. do I need to register my website with them or should they find it automatically ?

Just a side thought, I currently have an ebay account where I sell my painted minis, I am a powerseller and have 100% positive feedback ratings, do you think there is anyway I can use ebay to advertise my website ?

Cheers

As for eBay, you'd have to be careful as to how you went about doing that in your listings; here's eBay's Links policy governing off-eBay links in your auctions: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-links.html

Oh another thing that's useful - register an account with Google and add on the 'Webmaster Tools', you can then register your website on it and see all of the traffic stats that google sends to your site.
