How to sculpt chain

I think this is the right place for this. So Ive seen a few examples but I cant work it out for myself. Heres the problem. I want to sculpt some chains for my Maneaters in my ogre army. Kinda like the ones the Greek boys wear (sorry for all our greek viewers). Id like say 3 or 4 hanging around thier necks. If you want to see what the boys look like they are on page 7 of the WIP thread. So can you help me guys. Pictures would help too.

Go to a craft store and buy chains used to make jewelry, some of them are quite small and should fit your needs. Just don\'t waste money on gold or silver.

Use real chain if you want to get them accurate.

If you have to sculpt I would do it in two stages - the flat links first (the ones that look like ovals) then when this putty has set do the ones that you only really see from the side. It\'s not really that accurate but it can be a decent impression of chain at a small scale.

I\'ve got some awsome photo etched chains. They look really great. Quite thin, but then again, most sculpted chains are horribly oversized.

I tried real chain but when you put 2 or three rows it doesnt look so good. I want them to sit reasonable flat. Oh well I\'ll give it a go.

sculpt the flat ones ( a bunch of 0 shapes connected at top and bottom, an oval shape of putty with the inside pressed out works fine.) after that cures , take a small length, the same circumference as the other chains, and lay this over where they meet.

Aris... speak to the master Glenn... he did an ogre the other week with greenstuffed chains to ensure that they lie correctly in the contours of the body.... it is very very hard to do but we are at the GT Doubles tourny on Sat so come up and ask him

Chain: (from Sculpting Little Guys by Bobby Jackson):
Tools: small ball burnisher and flat bladed spatula tool

Steps: Roll out a thin \"snake\" of putty that is about half the diameter of the chain you want. Position this where you want it on the figure and find a tool with a round end that is the size that you want for the holes in each link. Use this to poke holes down the length of the chain to simulate the links that are laying parallel to the surface your chain is laying on. Then take a sharp bladed spatula and push in the gaps between the links to more clearly define each link. Next roll out another \"snake\" that is the same diameter as one of the \"walls\" of the links you just made. Lay this \"snake\" on top of the first one and use a small pointed tool to poke it down into each hole that you made in the first snake. This will simulate the links that are perpendicular to the surface your chain is laying on.

The above steps are for a single sided chain. If you wish to form a 3 dimensional chain (on a flail for example) form your initial putty “snake” around a fine gauge piece of wire. After you complete the steps above and the one sided chain is cured, flip it over and form the links on the opposite side in a similar fashion to that described above.

I saw a green with an exceptionally fine chain this morning. I asked Zygore how he did it, and here\'s more or less what he said;

Roll out a thin snake of putty and place it on the miniature. Press the tiny holes for the links that are parallel to the surface. Here\'s where it departs from WurzagUdUraZahuba\'s method; using tweezers, pinch the putty in-between the flat links to raise those that are perpindicular to the surface. The chain he made using this method was about 1mm across, and exceptionally well formed.
