Okay, so not GS. For what you\'re doing that should work fine.
The way I do hair generally is smoosh on the putty, roll and push it to about the right thickness and roughly shape it/trim it. Then I lay in some of the flow in broad strokes, switching to a medium tool for the next level of detail and finally use needles and/or a knife blade to add in the finest details and provide sharpness here and there, as well as the deeper cuts and trimming to final shape & length.
This is one of those things that\'s not really that hard, just takes a bit of practice to get \'the touch\'. Working with a sculpt you like at hand to refer to is a nice way of matching the quality and style you\'re aiming for.
I would personally never do this all with one tool; some guys do, but I think it nearly always looks better if you use a range of tool marks from a range of tools.
