I was thinking more along the lines of some of the ill-suited judges they have at Games Days

good point on the Games Day judges -

the judges at a historicals competition are ALL recognised, talented, experienced, tutored (in judging) peers of those competing. We have at least 2 Euromilitaire judges on these forums.

A question (to all) - are the judges at Gamesday(s) named either before or after the events? Cedric has already explained in other threads about the judges in France, but what about the other ones? Are they all GW employees? \'Eavy Metal painters? Management?

I am NOT trying to start a bashing here, I\'m just curious.

In the US it used to be the UK guests, but for the last 2 or 3 years it has been the US studio, and last year the Aussie in charge (Dave something or other) also judged.

Depends upon where you are. Oz is pretty different coz of the heats, first cut in Sydney was done by a GW employee who had previously won a demon.

In previous years the judges have included store staff and previous winners as well as guests from the UK. That gives you a nice breadth.

I think the judging is generally pretty good, at the end of the day it is always a popularity contest, do the judges like your entry or not?

Its not easy fror the judges either, they often disagree with each other and have to come to a concensus. What I like about recent Oz GDs is that the WD has printed the winners with a little bit about the judges thoughts behind their decisions. This sort of thing is really invaluable (and a massive ego boost when you are complimented on your blending in WD ), it also helps to explain why one model placed above another. You still may not agree with the decision, but at least its backed up.

hmmm

i\'m not sure what i should do with my entry.

model itself is 95% done (maybe 90%) but if i work on it non stop, could be done tomorrow evening.

the base will be another day or so due to freehand.

then i have another model i need to add to the main model which i need anotehr day or 2...then the banners

the banners i\'m confused on. Nano has been helping me..advice tips..so has Silphid... Nano\'s latest update for me based on pics i sent was that he thinks my concept for the overall piece is too extreme...the banners are too large, etc.

I goal is to add tons of freehand and hopefully i can paint it well. (i can draw well, but painting and sculpting is my weakness...yeah, great hobby i choose, huh?)

Not sure if i should scale down my vision...hehe

So why the big rush to get this done.. your not leaving for well over a month.. theres over a 1000 hours of potential painting time in there somewhere.. take your time and do this right.

I\'ve redone my mini twice over now in past 2 weeks..so frustrating..hehe

Aris... its an interesting thread.... Glenn and I were chatting about GD on the weekend (entries etc).

Most people don\'t know that Glenn went to the first GD in OZ in 98 and got SQUAT!!! Didn\'t even make the first cut.... he went home and for two years worked liked hell and came back and won the first of his 3 swords and 10 golds.... I. and Glenn believe the key is and will always be HARD work and lots and lots of pratice and the golden ingredient (no pun intended)... patience!!! Have a chat to Glenn any time Aris I know he\'d give you plenty of sound constructive advice...

Are you referring to Dave Taylor??? If so I hope he judges In Atlanta he will be there: they have him featured but I do not know if he is judge... he is from Oz that is for sure.


I will be glad to be judged by his standards....My gosh the army\'s he builds are so inventive and I have personally seen the paint job ...it is stellar to say it lightly.
His auction was the highest earning and I looked in awe at it every time I could till it went to its new home.

I\'d have to agree with Rodnik and Slardy that \"ass in the chair time\" and patience are both key. To be successful you really can\'t rush. Winning often seems to come down to who had enough time to pay attention to EVERY detail and fully carry out their original plan. In the end though if the competition is really stiff you can only guarantee yourself of making the cut. Final placement will always depend on personal taste, (and someone will always disagree).

Judging in the US has changed a little over the last couple of years. In Baltimore in the old days it was usually two studio guests and one staffer who did all the judging on multiple trips around. The last couple of years they use that set up to do first cut and then they switch judges to do final places, and last year actually had many different people each doing one or two categories to determine the final placing. I believe last year in Atlanta Dave Taylor was one of the three doing first cut, maybe with John Shaffer and someone else. I\'ve slept since then so I don\'t remember for sure.

Yes, it was Dave Taylor I was quite happy as well cause I watched him pick my stuff for first cut twice...although if Khavor says he only judges first cut, take his word for it. He\'s wone A LOT more demons than I ever will.

Hey Gav. I dont actually think I\'ll win a deamon this year but I have to start somewhere. I would be more than happy to talk to Glenn but have no contact details for him.

This has been a great thread with some very valuable info in it. If I do any good and end up writing an article i will include much of the advice that is contained in here.
