Tootskater:
There have been a number of threads and discussions on the colour of flames. Basically the hottest point of an object is the brightest. (Think about the Balrogs breath in Fellowship of the Ring.)
I would suggest that you need to start this area from a white primer and work out from a very Bright orange, mixing in yellows until you can make the very edges white again.
Hope that this helps.

I suppose you\'re talking about this one here:

Dragonsreach described how to paint flames (which works well on small stuff like torches but must be real tricky on large stuff like flame elementals - only the best painters manage a realistic look here).
This is a little different. It involves both the elements of flames and non-metallic metal.
The painter placed the hottest (meaning brightest) spots only where the surface of the metal wasn\'t disturbed by the edges or the cracks - and he did this in a little irregular fashion to make it look more natural. Note that he picked out the lower edge of the cracks with white which is an element of the nmm technique.
It seems to me that he didn\'t use colors of full brightness (e.g. pure blazing orange) but mixed them with white to make them less intense - but that is probably a matter of taste. Here\'s what I\'d do (please note that I\'m implying that you all paints can be toned down with white if you like it but I won\'t mention it anymore):
- prime white
- paint the whole thing dark orange
- blend the inner hot-spots up to golden yellow
- blend the golden yellow up to a little white (but very very few)
- pick the outer edges and the lower edge of the cracks out with white (or blend to white if you can).

I think this might work.

Have a nice day,
Tobi
