How well must one paint to sell on eBay or the net?

Ah well, it\'s all in the eye of the beholder really. There is some utter shite being sold on Ebay yet listed as \'pro painted\' or \'nicely painted\' or whatever! The best looking figure you can produce may not be what people are looking for. Tricky really.

You could sell figures that might get rated here as gaming standard quite easily, but you wouldn\'t get a lot for them. Though you would have quite a bit of interest from potential buyers due to the low price. As you move towards the higher rated standard of painting, then your prices can increase but your potential market declines.

I reckon good sellers would be:

Semi/totally naked chicks. Catering for the male majority who always appreciate a bit of porn.

LOTR or any other film/comic tie in. The cult following that these kind of things get have got to be a boost to your sales.

Any character/stupidly huge monster that GW has just released. Big names and big figures always grab a buyers attention.

Happy selling ;)

There seems to be a few kinds of things that sell well:

1. Any hot new releases.

2. Anything useful for gaming (i.e. Warhammer regiments).

3. Anything unusually well-painted.

In all cases, if you\'re trying to \"sell the paint job\" GOOD PHOTOS are the key.

Personally, I find selling regiments to be more worthwhile than individual minis. The reasons are people need these for gaming and don\'t want to paint them themself. At any given time there are always tons of individual minis for sale, but hardly any well-painted regiments. The downside, of course, is regiments take longer to paint and are more expensive to buy. I have seen some average quality paint jobs on regiments sell for good prices, but it all depends; is it something hard to paint? Is it a popular regiment for gaming? Have a lot of them sold lately on ebay? A lot of factors come into play...

The debate rages on.. I\'ve seen absolutely o\'orrid minis I wouldn\'t want in my prescense sell, but that\'s usually because they\'re sold in groups like Aschul said.. and they\'re also OOP. What\'s werid is some of the 5- jobs on there kep saying \"Pro Painted\".

Of course, we like to think professional means great, but that is not always the case. Professional means they do it for work. Now, the word Amatuer comes from the Latin Amicus which means \"like, love\". This means painting is something you love to do....

For some reason people think since you work on something for a while, you\'re a master at it. They also think just because you like smething, it\'s regarded as a hobby and you don\'t take it seriously. Obviously, Ebay can prove this wrong in some cases with the fact amatuers can be doing etter than professionals.

Yeah, I\'ve seen some professionally painted figures reviewed on another site and they were pretty crap! Very much in the dip \'n\' daub style. Very amateurish. But still \'professionally\' painted!

Do historic wargamers expect less when it comes to painting quality? I reckon they do after seeing some of the \'pro\' painted stuff on offer to them!

Seen some of the auctions that come up recently & I am surprised at the quality that comes up for sale.
A number of them I personally would class as RAF minis, yet these are selling as individuals.

There\'s no accounting for taste? If you want to find out what sells then the only thing I would suggest is test the water and see.

Ebay and selling mini\'s is not my cup of tea, if I paint a figure well then I want to keep it. I will paint commissions because then I know that the figure is going to someone who appreciates the painting.

If I wanted to make painting figures my full time business then I\'d have to charge per hour spent on the figure not an arbritary amount to start an auction. But then again I\'m fortunate enough to have a section of disposable income to keep GW & others in business.

My viewpoint and not intended to offend anyone.. regards;
Mike.

Just about any quality of figure can be found for sale on Ebay these days - but if you want to make decent money per fig, I\'d say you need around a 7-8 avg score. The folks who average 9\'s are the ones selling for hundreds :)
