How works the Artist Ratings?

Hi guys, I have a question.

Since I joined CMON a couple weeks back, I have been consistently listed as the worst artist on the site. Now, this may be, I'm certainly in the lower echelons, I know that! Anyway, it seems wierd that I am always last. For example, 9131 of 9131, or 9129 of 9129, 9124 of 9124, etc. Is this just some bug of CMON, or am I really always the lowest rated?

I'm just kinda interested to know where I really fall in the spectrum...

Thanks for any info!

normally it's based on the average of the 5 highest rated submissions you have that have at least 50 votes.
As long as you have less than that (either 1-4 submissions or 1-4 that have 50 votes or more) it'll show that rating.

This situation highlights a fault in selection algorithm - you've got 13 minis posted in your gallery, but none of them have more than 50 votes, thus you don't generate a rating. There have been threads on the subject of diminishing votes and non-rated artists in the past, and it would appear a fix is yet to be implemented. I shall sally forth and vote on all your stuff :) It ain't much, but hopefully it'll help a wee bit :)

For what it's worth, I don't think your work rates a 3, which is where a lot of it is currently sitting. You have some really good ideas for dynamic sculpts, especially the wardancers, but at the moment your technical ability doesn't match your imagination. I think it's fair to say this is probably true of almost everyone on this site, so don't let it get you down. Keep sculpting, and keep researching technical things like proportion and musculature. There are plenty of good books/websites out there on traditional sculpting methods, and a lot of what they say holds true for sculpting 32mm minis, especially for things like anatomy. Good luck, and happy modelling :)

Agree with MIJ and I can see your progress from your gallery. Btw I voted on all to help you get to 40 (I have the same 40 problem :))

i have had a look thru your stuff the only thing letting you down is the sculpting medium it looks reall rough, for that size stuff i would use green stuff if i were you and a wet brush can really smooth it off. Try giving Moonmin a shout he does a lot of green stuff and he's a decent sort and im sure he would share some of the secrets of the greenn menace lol.

Hey, thanks guys, all of you. Yeah, most of them are pretty rough, but I'm working on it! Startng in with the green stuff, too. The last two are part sculpey, part green stuff...

Thanks for the info, advice, and help!

I'm about to vote in hope of reaching 50, perhaps the limit of being eligible should be lowered to 40 as there doesn't seem to be the same amount of votes as there used to be. During a quiet period you may be lucky to get to 35 votes.

Edit* Just finished voting, I think your scores currently belong in the 2-3 (with a few exceptions that I voted 6-8) mark due to the sculpting however your painting is fantastic, like others have said with more practice in sculpting your scores will improve quite quickly as your painting standard looks good.

Revelen, don't worry about the ratings too much. This forum has the best artists from around the world on it, so things are judged at a very high standard. Nothing against posting in the gallery, but in my opinion starting up a work in progress thread will get you much more constructive feedback than just a numerical score.

Huh, I had no idea it was only your 5 highest rated. I always thought it was everything. Nice to know.

I agree, once my projects get 40 votes the score rarely changes between there and 50.

Dragon, thanks. Yeah, a lot of the sculpts are pretty scuzzy. I actually thought the painting was worse, though. Glad you disagree!

Bailey. Honestly, I'm really not worried about ratings, more just curious as to how or if they functioned. Thanks for the tip about the WIP thread. Criticism would be very helpful, so I'll have to go start one.
