How would you go about achieving this red?

Hey.
Cutting straight to the chase, how would you go about replicating the red on this guys\' cloak?

In case anyone\'s interested, I\'ll go ahead and elaborate too. After more than a few years of backburner autopilot army painting, I\'ve started taking mini painting seriously again recently. I\'ve read up on lots of color theory and general artistic literature since then, but I notice that when the minis n paints come out, I still think in terms of old-school GW paint names and if I don\'t watch myself, I have a terribly narrow view of what pots goes well together as shades n highlights. So I figure it\'s time to break out of the complacency and not resort to old tricks as soon as something difficult comes along.

My attempts in this case so far has involved GW Vermin Brown, VMC926 Red, and VMC Transparent Red. I\'m guessing it\'s the transparent red that\'s messing up my results because it\'s too purple, but it\'s been my autopilot red glazing crutch for years.

That looks a lot like VMC Red Leather...

It\'s certainly more terracotta than red. Dark browns and blues for shade, terracotta for the base and I\'d probably mix a (light) yellow ochre in for highlights.

Hey, good to see your post! Your mindset describes exactly what got me coming here 6 months-ish ago in the first place. It is an eye opener when you break the trend of many years of habits.

My reccomendation is that if you see a result you want to emulate to PM the original poster as well. I\'ve yet to have anyone NOT answer a question directly relating to one of their miniatures and the tech they used.

Also I would try posting WIP pics and see what kind of feedback you get. I founf that route to be most helpful as well.

Try this:

Basecoat mix of GW Gory Red + Schorched Brown

1 Highlight with gory red
Shade with basecaot mix plus little bit of black (just a tip of the brush)
2highlight with Gory red + golden Yellow
Glaze down with basecoat mix or gory red (depends on what kind of saturation You want to achive).

To add more depth i would also glaze the shadows with a mix of black+ dark angels green, and black + some dark blue. But this would change the brownish hue of the shadows.

Or VMC Hull red, somewhere between GW Dark flesk/scab red. BTW it\'s superb for rust!
