Howling Griffons Project

I have posted this project in a couple of other forums and thought it stupid not to have it on my favourite site, so here it is. The information will be cut and paste so it is the same information across the forums I have posted this project on.

My Howling Griffon Project was inspired by an article in White Dwarf which also showcased a nicely painted HG army. Here I will be attempting my own small Howling Griffons force with some conversions thrown in, even though I am slightly hamstrung in that I don\'t really know much about 40K. These are the first 40K models I have painted so let me know what you think.

The project will consist of the following units....

Bike squad - 3 bikes, one of them an attack bike. All on 60mm bases and posed as dynamically as possible
Rhino - To contain some form of awesome freehand work where possible and have some minor conversion work.
Space Marines - Small force of marines.
Dreadnought I was thinking about doing one, but hell I\'ll put it in as a definite part of the project.
Techmarine I have one kicking about somewhere so in he goes.

It will be sold on ebay when complete (sniff, sniff)

W.I.P

Here\'s the base, just a few more details and highlights to paint

Here\'s the sidecar, using two washes to shade the model. Lot\'s left to do here.

Here is the link to pictures of the first completed bike, some small conversions on it. http://www.coolminiornot.com/126605

Well, let me know what you\'re thinking of it.

**UPDATE** - Bought a space marine commander a few days ago and am currently deciding what weapons to give to him, any help would be good!!!

Hey dogface (no insult intended!) I have clicked on the links of the bike and they are looking VEEEERY nice. I especially like how you have done your yellows.

Some thoughts on the project- and thinking from a point of selling it on ebay- is the bike squad legal in gaming terms? I always believed that 3 bikes were needed to attach an attack bike. I may be wrong as my codex is round a friends but you would stand a better chance (and get a better price) selling it on if it was a game legal unit.

In respect tothe weapon choices on the commander, I have seen people cream themselves on Ebay when magnets are used to make Space marine Commanders weapons changeable, and prices have risen greatly at auction.

Hope this has been helpful in helping you get a better price.

The painting looks spot on to me, would like to see more units as and when they are done- especially your dread and Rhino.

Good stuf DFB!

I like that yellowish-brown color quite a bit, and in fact just started a thread about it for a project of my own....

Care to share what colors you used there?

Thanks for the suggestions Orky, will definately consider it as I have come across loads of posts going on about magnetised changeable weapons. I will be painting both weapons for the attack bike and leaving the pin unglued so that will be swappable. Just got to find a place that stocks tiiny magnets and get myself a drillbit to match. The only thing I don\'t like about doing it is that it robs me of all the bitz I would have had. I will be nicking some of them for a sergeant though - I\'ll probably use the figure with the pointed front bit on his helmet. What worries me is it means the hands won\'t be perfectly flush to the model if there is a magnet in there. I would have to buy some spare arms and shoulder pads to put the magnet in the shoulder joint I guess. I haven\'t seen a magnetised model, easy to hide on a vehicle but what does a figure look like??

Supervike - All I do for it is about three coats of bad moon yellow for the base coat (on skull white primer spray), bestial brown wash, then I wet blend blood red, blazing orange and bad moon yellow over the washes until I\'m happy. I use thin washes of bad moon yellow to bring back the yellow where required. On the first bike I did, I didn\'t do the wash of bestial brown - that was straight wet blended blood red/blazing orange and bad moon. I got both bikes looking the same though. The highlights on the edges (still trying to master my neatness here) are skull white with a touch of bad moon yellow mixed in. I didn\'t highlight the attack bike using pure white because it didn\'t look right to me on the first bike I did. Don\'t get me wrong, it does look good when you hold it in your hand (much better than those photos can convey) but I don\'t know, it looks a little artificial highlighting pure white on those edges, maybe it\'s just me. I\'ll check your project thread a little later.

----Progress Update----

Nearly done the attack bike now, just have to paint and highlight the reds on the whole model, glue the front shield together and mount it on the base then add weathering effects - oh and finish highlighting the base as well. Photo\'s fairly soon, I have to try and paint a wood elf for a competition before I worry about the bike, I have days left and it\'s not going too great due to a bad finish (maybe it was my priming) on the model, the surface is uneven on the knee and you can see it through the paintjob still.

Hello, I\'ve resurrected this project from the dead recently. It was going to be on hold until I have set up my garage but I got bored one day and set up some space in my living room!

**Update**

Attack bike nearly done, just painting the rider and then the headlight and guns. Here\'s some shots.....

Removed the banner pole because I thinks its ugly and replaced it with a custom radio....

Guns will be swappable on the bike.

Have made a start on the Terminator squad. They will have magnets fitted so some weapon swaps can be done. Here\'s the test base, painted to fit with the colour scheme I\'m using,

That\'s all for now. Had a few ideas regarding customisation of the vehicles. I want to get some forgeworld custom rhino kits - razorback and the missile launcher one and maybe make a custom dozer blade as well. This will give the armies Rhino three customisation options.
I also found an old mark 5 (so I\'m told) armour space marine who will be a sergeant done in the old Howling Griffons armour style on the left in this picture...

Terminators coming soon!
