Apologies, I'm a total HTML noob and my ability doesn't stretch further than

I'm trying to modify my signature so that the banner for my Facebook page acts as a clickable hyperlink.
I've read that the following code should allow this however it doesn't appear to work!
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/MadClownMiniatures"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr328/moonmin82/MadClownMinis-CMONbanner.jpg"></a>
I notice that it doesn't seem to follow the square bracket convention I'm used to and wondered if different forums worked off slightly different coding conventions? I've tried making the odd ammendment here or there but still no luck!
