Huron Blackheart - the Tyrant of Badab

Hi Folks,

I fancied a change from the Ultramarines for a bit and decided to paint up Huron Blackheart as I had the miniature from when it first came out in 2007 and hadn't got around to painting it.

I painted this model using advise from the September 2007 White Dwarf as there was a masterclass on this particular figure and I found it pretty helpful. Some of the suggestions in highlighting red were handy as I hadn't thought of using elf flesh to highlight red. I deviated slightly from the masterclass version by having some type of molten look to the powerclaw and axe.

I also used the Asurman Blue wash to deepen the red of the armour and used a green and purple wash on the gold areas instead of the standard Devlin Mud. Overall I'm fairly pleased with this one. The molten metal approach on the powerclaw and axe needs work so I may revisit this in the future.

What do you lot think?

Hi Shawn R.L.

The familiar comes with the model. I usually leave them in the box as I don't game but I liked the look of this one and thought to paint it up to so that it matches it's 'master'. Thanks for the comments with the armour. I like the deeper tones.

Cheers,

Oli

Definite steps up from your last model here. I didn't see any mold lines on this one (Woohoo!), the red is very smoothly blended and doesn't have the immediate line highlights of your last entry. Good job there! One thing to be said is the photography is probably not doing this any favors at the moment. Some areas are really shadowed out and I can't really do any kind of critique without seeing them. One thing that looks a bit flat now is the gold. Try experimenting with some mixtures of gold colors (as you did with the red) to add more depth to those areas of the mini. Overall, definite improvement though, so very nice!

Thanks for the comments TheDrescher. I agree that the photos could do with some improvement. The room I work in is quite dark even in daylight so I'll see about getting a couple more lamps to improve the lighting situation.

I'm glad that there's some visable improvement from my last model. It's a case of a slight improvement on one area before reaching an obstacle with another but honest critique really helps. I did use a mixture of water down brown, purple and green washes on the gold areas so maybe I need to work on that area next.

Cheers again!

For me, the gold looks suitably dark from the washes, it's just getting some highlights in there to offset the shadows, From what the pictures show, the gold looks to go from shadow to midtone and stops there. possibly going back in with straight gold after washing to bring some of the color back to the high points then mixing your gold with a tiny bit of mithril silver to hit the high edges.
