I have only ever seen a tornado out at sea two years ago when I was in the Far East we watched it touch down and swirl around for about an hour before it went back up, we were about 5 miles from it though so it was amazing to see but not be involved.
Over here 50 mph winds are not really classed as that strong and in fact in most parts of Wales they class them as a stiff breeze, I have been in the Scottish mountains with 100 mph winds in the open though and thats a struggle to stay on your feet let alone stay on the mountain long enough to get on the path back down
