I am a genius, why didn\'t GW think this up before?

As an avid gamer of all genres (Pc, Console, Minis, and an occasional MUD) and future Game Designer, it came to me today while preping my Tau Commander... Why doesn\'t GW come up with a Battlesuit Simulator? To me, ANY giant fighting robot game does good especially Battletech. Just think of the features! Choose language in Tau, English or both! See enemies through your Drones! It doesn\'t end with the suits, though... Starseige did pretty good by allowing you to use tanks, so why not drive around a Devilfish? If I had the program knowledge and data, I\'d begin on it immediatly.. Shoot first and get GW\'s seal of approval later... All the other games they\'ve put out lack many things (like programming, anyone notice how you can\'t use Chaos Gate as a multiplayer, but it is?) So I think they\'d be better off.

Having worked and been around several similar projects like Quake40K, I\'ll tell you that isn\'t the greatest idea in the world. They bone you over and over and over again since you\'ve already made it. They\'ll get the terms they want because it\'s their intellectual property they\'re using.

And yes, I agree more GW stuff would be cool, though every game I\'m aware of so far has sucked except, somewhat Dark Omen. Though the last scenario was a bit more than ridiculous.

GW SUXOR!

games workshop isnt the brightest when it comes to video games so its best to leave that area unexplored and lett them suffer. most of their gaes have sucked hard as hell including several under way. they always get SH!tty video game coompanies who produce yet another half assed failure to the game market. at one time i was strongly considering approaching them with a project. two things to consider.

1. they are money hungry A$$holes. this is evident from management on down and reflected mostly absurd prices, remaking models and books and revisionsjust to shake things up. its funny there coming out with all these new models yet they still never completed many characters and troop types in various books.

2. as NV said, would you really like to work out a deal with them? you know GW has a ton of ways they could be raking in money of thier concepts and universes yet they just see fit to plug the consumer for all thier worth.

i came to the conclusion that the best way to make a 40k game is to inovate your own beyond it. if you cant beat the ideas and history and characters and world of 40k etc then i wouldnt even consider making the game. but with a company like this, id rather beat them then slave for them.

Personally I thought a MechWarrior4 convert might be the best way to accomplish something like that. I always thought that game would kick serious arse for Dreadnoughts/Titans. Battlesuits are just a natural extension of that idea.

Only problem is that GW and Microsoft would have to collaborate to make this work, and to defile GW so might not be a good idea ;)

What would be more fitting ih tink would be making WH40K models, maps, textures for Tribes2....

Space marines
Change the bike to a motor bike, change the scouth jet to a Land speeder, the mobile base could be a Land raider, the tank could be a anihilator and the list goes on...

Fortunalty alot of the vehilces in WH40K are somewhat similar, so balancing out vehicles and weapons for the different species wouldn\'t bee all that difficult...

Today\'s Penny Arcade reminded me of the whole money grubbing game industry:

Needless to say yu can substitue \"Blizzard\" for \"Games Workshop\" of \"Wizards of the Coast\" And \"Ghost \" for WH40K or M:tG :p

I\'ve never paid much attention to GW\'s attempts at computer games. They should just stick to models! Anyone remember their piss poor attempts to become a record company back in the late 80\'s? Absolute tosh! Ok, Bolt Thrower were (are?) a pretty good band (though the GW link did appear to force them to use GW art work which didn\'t look that good on a record sleeve). Then they go and dig up all sorts of crap like UFO! I can just see the GW big wigs all sat around a big table drinking coffee and someone says \'hey, let\'s put out a computer game/sign a band\'. And they all say \'cool idea\'. Absolutely no forethought!

Yeah, I love Bolt Thrower. Have all their albums (well most, I lost their first one years ago). The rest of the bands sucked though. Chaos Gate\'s multiplayer worked fine for me. Single player was buggy as hell though. Most Warhammer PC games sucked, but I LOVED Dark Omen. Still play it to this day. They have a 40K game coming out for the 3 consoles soon. Maybe it will be OK.

I had the exact opposite problem, I played single fine, but I couldn\'t use any vehicles or daemons and dreds in multiplayer... weird. Dark omen was okay, but then I upgraded my video card and it ran pretty crappy then.

I forgot about Warhammer online. It does look pretty good from the screenshots. Thats not to say they won\'t completly screw it up though. I hope they don\'t.

I think that perhaps the reason GW computer games are/were so terrible is to put more emphasis on their tabletop games.
A lot of people wonder why GW doesn\'t make a realtime strategy game like Command and Conquer, or Starcraft... I like to think its because if they made a decent game, some people would stop buying the minis, which cost more in the long run. So its all about profit.

That might be a factor, but alot of it is they just know nothing about the PC game biz. Don\'t forget they actually have nothing, or at least not much to do with the games. They simply own the rights to the material, and a game studio actually makes them. They were probably either paid for the license, or approached the companies to make a game (most likely the former). Thats probably the extent of their involvement. They may have also provided some material to help the developers get better aquanted with the universe. Chaos Gate, which would have been very good if not for all the bugs, was made by SSI (absolutley no ties or relation to GW). So was the Eldar game I think (a real turd). Space Hulk was made by Mindscape. Dark Omen and Shadow of the Horned Rat was EA/Mindscape as well. I think that epic 40k game Final Liberation was SSI. FL was actually not too bad. I would imagine GW was just as disappointed as the rest of us at how these companies trashed the games. If taking away from thier tabletop business was a big factor, they wouldn\'t have licensed the rights at all though, I would guess.

For the most part, games liscensed under the GW name don\'t have that good a track record. As a whole most franchise names don\'t do well as video games, there are a few reasons for this. Pressure from both publisher and liscensee to finish the game as soon as possible. They have to dish out the money to develop the game and aquire the rights for the games. Because of deadline and management pressure, the developers usually have no choice but to release a game that is technically and atristiclly below par.

A few months ago THQ aquired the rights to publish games for the 40k universe. The newest title now in development is: Firewarrior (you play as TAU- for the first poster)

http://www.firewarrior.com/

There\'s reference to it being either a FPS(Quake) or first person action title(Metal Gear/SC:Ghost).
Right now there isn\'t too much available about the game.

This time I hope they get it right and make a game that everyone can enjoy. Not just a title that is rushed to the stores because everyone else is doing it too.
