I have realized at least in my gw that it seems people are getting "let go" and then they rehire. and unless its a more vet staff member who has been there for a long time, they like to hire and rehire. this method saves them money. they tell the people they let go that they are downsizing, but they just don't want to many pay increases. which happens the longer you work there. in fact a guy who was "let go" due to downsizing, was invited to interview again for the jib about 5 months later...

They just re-introduced the area manager posts, because they realised that regional managers couldn't get around to all the stores they had in reasonable time :D

Arbitrary and/or unexplained reorganizations, petty management decisions, forced extra hours without legally required compensation, unwritten rules about your own personal hobby choices..
Sounds like my entire Retail AND Military experience, as well as those of many friends.

While I grant that this is not universal (and I'm actually glad of it) Master of Fact deserves to know what kind of situation he might find himself in. I would like him to have a long and successful career with GW, as I know you do, and so it's important that he knows the score going in, both the good things that you related, and the potential landmines that I related.
It's still a long way from "This happened to two guys I know" to "This will happen to you" or "This is happening to everyone".

While it's good to know the facts, it just doesn't seem to be the best way to tell someone how to succeed at the job by relating only horror stories that are presented as inescapable and inevitable.
I don't usually respond to people basically calling me a liar but in your case I'll make an exception. Where exactly is the "around here" you are speaking of? because the "around here" I am speaking of is the whole damn middle of the United States from Minneapolis to Austin,Tx.

"Around here" is the Dallas Metroplex area. Figured the first part of my post would have been enough to move away from dropping the long name every sentence. While I now live about three hours outside of there at current I make almost bi-weekly visits back up there. I'm friendly with most of the GW staff in the area. I've met and played against some of the regional and former GW employees in the area since around 2001. So far the staffing hasn't changed much for some time, and they've opened up opportunities for more GW staff and have plans to build several more stores (or so the rumor is, and it has been more than whispers in the dark).

I'd like to know where you are located. where "this bunk or total bull" isnt happening?

The fact is that it's not happening everywhere, and not everyone is effected. While I'm not saying that a lot of it isn't probably happening to some people, to present it as an inalienable fact that this is happening to everyone based off of reports from where it is happening is...well...false. I'm sorry if it came off as seeming to say that it's a flat out lie, I'm not saying that, I'm saying that the facts presented at the beginning are not as wide spread and all encompassing as they're presented, and thus are...well...not as factual as they would or could be.

Alright, I'm eating crow on this one.

While those around me were unawares, GW has begun the same period of interviewing employees for their own jobs in the DFW area. Likewise the previously two-man store is now a one-man store, people are leaving, and previously popular customer services (like the Painting Academy) are being dropped entirely in such stores.

The part that gets me is that even though it's been happening in other areas, there wasn't much notice from GW about it.
