I am wholly convinced that courier services are a complete SCAM when it comes to personal delivery. We have the idea that \"courier delivery\" is somehow more prestigious and fancy than \"the post office\", but this dates back to before the days of higher-grade postal service like next-day delivery, traceable mail etc. The truth is it SUCKS for personal deliveries, unless somebody is home all day to wait for the courier to arrive. And service levels range from \"okay\' to \"terrible\" based on the stories I\'ve heard.

Courier:
- fast delivery, for a price
- different delivery speeds for different budgets
- traceable
- may destroy or lose your package
- deliver to your home while you\'re at work, see that you\'re not there, and then leave your package in a depot out in the industrial park, which is only open during business hours

Post office:
- fast delivery, for a price
- different delivery speeds for different budgets
- traceable (at all levels but basic postage)
- may destroy or lose your package
- will leave small packages right in your mail box
- if you are not home to receive a larger package, will leave your package at the nearest post office, which may be only a few blocks away

In all fairness...I do agree the Postal Service does is cheaper and better, but in my area at least, if the UPS guy needs to drop off a package and we are not home, he leaves a note for redelivery. On that you can give instructions (ie leave it in the garage) or whatever. ALSO, the depots for UPS and FED EX are open until 7 pm here. I have had to drive out to get a package before.

There was the one time that the Postman tried to delivery a largish package (a warhammer army) to me and we werent home. So he put it on the front seat of my unlocked car (which just happened to be in the driveway) no note or anything. I found it the next time I drove that car. A nice surprise, but a bit odd.

Well, lets see NSA - if I were stateside I would agree with most of your points. However over here I can actually count on my Fed Ex pakages making it from the states to me here in Iraq in 4 days. The postal service can take anywhere from 4 days to well, the longest a piece of mail took to get here was mailed in November, arrived in Feb! I might understand that if it were a package, but it was two letters.

You found the package in the unlocked car... you found the unlocked car... ??? I\'m confused, how is it possible to leave an unlocked car and still find it in your driveway? ??? Next you\'ll be telling me that it\'s safe to walk around alone at night! I can only guess that you\'d removed the radio, and locked all three gearlocks.

I wish! Recently, I had a courier next-day package arrive four days later. From Cape Town, a mere 1,200 km\'s away. And the call themselves \"Speed Services\".

They do do this, but they can only re-deliver... during business hours! When most people are not at home!

I have had to drive out to get a package before.
That kind of reduces the value of the service, doesn\'t it? Even if they are open late.

I can agree that post(wo)men sometimes use \"inventive\" means to leave parcels, eg the car story (or in my case, tucked behind my side gate where I happened to not notice it for a day or so). That can be a little sketchy.

I\'d say Iraq falls out of my definition of \"personal delivery\". You\'re in a virtual war zone, occupied by the full might of the American army. Everything probably operates differently there...

I\'m not just generally trashing couriers here, just saying that it\'s a really silly way for a company/individual in, say, New York, to send to an individual in Toronto, or Indianapolis, or Ghent, or London. But it happens all the time, many mail order companies don\'t even have an option to use the post office even within their own country :(

When we had a document sent through fedex by a bank from south seattle to north seattle, a drive of at worst 2hrs. When they did the tracking on the package it was stuck in Tennesee becuase of a snow storm. That was back when everything went through one distribution point.

wow, didn\'t mean to start a drink inducing discussion. Actually, it came with the video card loose in the case and the card hit a microswitch (which after a lot of tinkering and swearing i discovered) that i had to reset and then do some playing in the BIOS. BUT, i did get it fixed and i\'m happy and a half now. This tuesday i go to my battalion and soon after that i\'m getting my DSL, so i\'ll be back to normal then... minus classes, watches and duty sections ;)

Take care,

Correct. I\'m finished with basic and at A School right now learning my rating (Navy for job). Then i might have C School, or go straight to my duty section. Looks like there\'s a lot of billets for San Diego, Austraila, Hawaii, Iraq and Afghanastan. Not sure where they\'ll send me though, all depends on C School and how i do in A School. There is a lot of talk about moving to the NSA after my military obligation is up though... so NSA might get a kick out of thatlol

Itchy, I hope your computer was insured. If so, a claim on it should be fairly easy. Things like that are unfortunate, but they happen. At least with the major services, the tracking is reliable. The Postal Service methods leave a little to be desired.

As for daytime delivery, if you plan on having packages dlivered regularly from FedEx, you can call them and have your address marked as no signature required. This is ok if you are in a neighborhood where it is ok for the courier to leave it at the door during the day. If there is a bush next to the door they will often leave it behind it.

You can also have the person mark it with a signature release. The current service levels are around 97-98% for FedEx, which is pretty good. Think about how many of those are on time considering they handle around 5 million packages a night. Not too bad.

Oh, and yeah, I work there, but even I have had things be late. Still, I see more packages delivered to me late from UPS than from Fedex and we get a decent amount of stuff delivered here. And let\'s not even talk about DHL in the US.

DHL rocked my world a while ago... standard international shipping rate, and they picked up my package at 9pm in Chicago and had it on my doorstep at noon the next business day. In Canada. 3-5 business days was the estimate I think.

Anyway they\'re batting 1.000 at the moment, and UPS is like negative. I hate them. Crossing from the US into Canada they pay the $5+tax or whatever at the border, and charge you like $30 in service fees. And it\'s not optional.

I simply can\'t afford to buy from any webstores that ship out of the US with UPS.

Stick with a job you can tell people about at parties. Plus, my namesakes... not the most well-thought-of organization these days. A few warrantless domestic wiretaps and people get so pissy.
