I hate wooden bases.

A lot of people put large wooden bases under their minis and I\'d have to say that a majority of judges these days are suckers for this kind of posturing.

If you\'ve never seen body building competitions on television, the contestants constantly run in front of each other so the judges can\'t see the other contestants. It\'s just like putting your mini on a tall wooden base. I think it\'s really dumb and it makes the model look like a cheap \"dime-store\" gift.

Tell me, please, that there is someone out there that feels the same way.

Ahem. The biggest reason is to have something to hold onto when viewing the mini, at least for me. Even if it does make your mini stand out more i don\'t think any judge care about if it has a displaybase or not. Having oversized bases can look a bit stupid though, a proper display base should enhance the presentation of the mini.

exactly what Sven said. If you paint for display you have something you can pick you the piece with, and somewhere to put a title plate on. It sets off the miniature like a picture frame.

To me, it looks cheap without a wooden base!!!

At historical competitions, in painting categories, not even the groundwork is taken into consideration when judging.

I do agree that extra large bases for a small miniature are silly.

rextalon, do you have experiences where a piece was judged superior because it was mounted on a wooden display plinth?

Yes. What Sven and the others have said. The GD rules state:
\"Many people like to mount their models upon large scenic display bases or plinths. This is permitted providing the individual model can be removed and stand upon an appropriate sized gaming base. If the scenic base is integral to the model your entry will only be eligible for the Diorama category. Although display bases can add to the impact of a unit, our judges do not take such bases into consideration when making their decisions. In fact models on display bases are usually removed from the base when being judged.\"

Doesn\'t seem like they are very bothered, so I don\'t think you should be either :)

i think the trick is not to go over the top. they look nice with something simple. anything crazy will draw attention to the model but in a negative way

They dont allow plinths for the Oz GDs. But I agree for comps it can help push a mini into the judges attention.

For comps they maybe should be removed from the plinth but for display they look good.

I can see your point. Often I see the wooden bases as stained or prepared very poorly and they do look cheap.

BUT...when done right, they look pretty awesome.

The majority of competitions I go to, display plinths are the norm. In fact, removing the model from the plinth is simply impossible, as it\'s often built into the base:

If judges see a wooden plinth base and that sways their opinion, then they quite simply shouldn\'t be judges

The only competition I\'ve ever seen that restricts this is GW\'s.

See! This is what I\'m talking about. See that one on the bottom in the middle? That looks completely superfluous.

I agree that certain wooden bases, like the justicar above it and to the far right, look fine. That base is small and respectable. The rest look like they spent more time on the base and detract from the presentation, if you ask me.

Oh, and \"yes, my mini did get beat out by someone with a monsterous wooden base\" But that\'s why my mini didn\'t have one to begin with. I have always thought the wooden base sucked, and always will.

I wish!

Those are from The Spanish Team\'s display at the recent Leon Rampante competition in Spain. It was a mainly historical show but the mini painters are getting more and more these days........

I don\'t have a problem with them per se

The problem comes when they are very large or decorated in such a way that they distract the eye from the miniature. In this way I think an over the top base can spoil a piece

They have their uses, and often look good to finish off a piece. I like ones that are not overly tall, are simple (i.e no complicated edges, black or dark wood) and are not much wider than the miniature or diorama\'s base.

Nor do I.

Exactly, a miniatures display base is a compliment to the mini, not the reverse. It\'s certainly not posturing to want to show off your mini to it\'s best advantage.
