Hey All,

Sorry for the pun ;)

I have a theory concerning scores. First I should say that I *really* try to not take the scores too much to heart. The main reason that I post here is to get feedback and to discuss with you all about painting, which is a hobby that I have come to love. Especially since my scores have consistantly been in the sevens (ha! just a little joke! :D)

Now my theory concerning the scores is this: if you want a slightly higher score, that is, as much as .5 higher, you should not ask for feedback here. I know this sounds stupid, and is especially for me since the reason I am scoring above 5 now is because of the feedback that I got here, but it seems to be true. Here is what I base this mini theory on:

The first time I posted it, I asked for feedback here and my score evened out to a 6.6. I took it out of the gallery so I could submit it to the Reaper painting contest, and then reposted it, without asking for feedback. Now, you can see that the second time it is posted (same picture by the way), the score evened out to a 7.

Another case in point: I posted the gobbos and asked for feedback:

And ended up with a 7.1. Two weeks before I had submitted the ogre:

But I did not ask for feedback, and got a 7.6. Now I think the ogre is a little better, mostly because the base is more complicated, but I\'m not sure that it is *that* much better. Maybe I\'m wrong and just paranoid? :eek:

Now I should also say that I don\'t think that the reason the scores are lower is because the people leaving feedback are tougher. In my experience, most of the people who leave feedback rate the mini at the high end. So I guess it would be all those who read the forums but don\'t leave comments who bring the score down slightly?

What do you think? I know, it sounds like a bunch of hooey. :p I\'d like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience or if this is just a fluke.

Your theory may hold at least some water. As you say, it wouldn\'t be the helpful people who leave comments and suggestions that lower the score, but the anonymous \"others\". I\'ve heard the same thing said about asking for votes in the \"Shout Box\" Seems to attract snipers like blood in the water attracts sharks.

Of course, I speak of this entirely intellectually, because my work is quite sniperproof :D;):D

Eh, I think you might be going a bit to far. Vote casting is a much more random thing than any of our feeble minds can comprehend. I\'ve had re-posts get higher, lower, and everywhere in between (though there really isn\'t much else in between) without asking for advice. My guess is it really depends on those first 50 people who see the post:flip::bouncy:

One answer may be the fact that you are submitting your work for review by the \'hardcore\' members of the community when posting on the forums. Those who have seen much of what the site has to offer and are perhaps a little more circumspect when dishing out marks. Perhaps it\'s just coincidence...... Perhaps you get more snipers........ Ah, who cares?!:D

I think that you\'ve got quite close to the mark there.
If you consider that the voters on CMON are divided into demographic groups you can assign concepts to their viewing and voting:

- I\'m new and all these are super fantasic and I\'ve never seen anything like them before, so I vote a 10 on everything.

- I\'m a gamer and I don\'t see the need to paint anything better than a table top so you\'re all posers and I won\'t vote higher than a 5.

- I\'m socially inept and have no friends and can\'t paint, so I \'ll penalise you for your good work. I vote 1 on everything.

- I\'m just taking the p*ss out of kids I know at school who think they are so clever painting toy soldiers. I vote a 1 on everything.

- I\'m a painter and I\'m jealous of the quality that other painters on this site have so I\'ll vote low to bring them closer in level to me.

- I\'m a painter and anxious to learn to paint better so I\'ll vote and comment on other peoples mini\'s in the hope that they\'ll look at my stuff and give me advice. I vote slightly higher than the average.

- I\'m a painter of reasonable standard and I vote and comment in the hope that I can help others to improve and therefore pass my level and in turn help me.

- I\'m a good painter who likes to help others out so I\'ll advise them as best as I know and vote at a level which will give them encouragement but not over inflate their actual level in order that the may have something to aim for.

- I\'m mainly a forum poster who loves looking at others work and I vote according to the quality of work.

- I\'m a Forum Hog who\'s been sniped B*tched about it and then thought WTF, it\'s only toy soldiers after all. Pass the bottle! :D

None of the above should be taken too seriously, after all it\'s all about having fun. lollollol

my tendency is to vote slighty over the mean rating value, mainy to give useful suggestions and to help \"table top\" minis to get better, but also because i find so many beautiful minis that are under-rated imho.

i think that the shoutbox is dangerous as snipers are just waiting for some new victim looking there

posting on the forum is a good thing as you may receive a lot of tips and advices from very good painters... and snipers do not look at forums so much i think

in general, i\'ve noted how votes went down even for very good minis: if a year ago a miny could get a 8+, now it gets 7.5 or less
a 9 of a year ago, now gets barely a 8

that\'s why i try to see the beauty in every mini and vote higher that average...

am i the only?
