I love my airbrush!

That's right, I said it, I am in love with my new airbrush. I bought an Aztek A270 a few days ago- I'm using the cans of propellant because I can't afford an air compressor yet, but this model has an adapter that will allow me to use a compressor in the future.

I've spent the past few days using it as a water gun, as the tutorial DVD suggest. This was useful to get a feel for the different tips and how to get a good flow from it, but you can only spray down so many sheets of construction paper before getting the itch to move to real paint.

I just finished using it to basecoat my Dreadnaught in Tamiya Gunmetal and my first thought was "how the heck did I live without this thing!?" In under 5 minutes I had a fully basecoated Dread, which would have taken hours and a couple of coats by brush! I feel like the world of painting has opened up to me- I can start doing cool stuff like salt masking now!

It's good innit? This is pretty much how I felt once I started to use mine; when you see what can be done (and how fast!) it's easy to wonder how you lived without one.

The Aztek was only $45... but the propellant cans I'm getting are $7 each- that's what'll get you. I've got a 3 unit commission coming in that might pay for a compressor, which will save a lot of money in the long run, but for now it's not too hard on the old wallet.

the problem is not the cash$$ really, i just dont feel i have enough space in my apartement to maintain an air brush. that kind of sucks. :weep:

I think he mean that living in an apartment seriously severes the possibility to use it;) I have the same problem myself. I live in an apartment, I desperately want an airbrush, but I have no place I can use it! I don't even have room for a proper place to paint anymore, I need to bring out the stuff everytime I sit down to paint:( Well, there's always Room as such, but living with a gf that has about 0 understanding for your hobby seriously neglects that:p And a malicious cat that will tear anything apart that isn't cast in iron and / or nailed down doesn't help either:p

yet another reason why I will never own a cat. My dog at least understands boundaries and won't go where I tell her not to.

My cat understands boundaries aswell, breaking them is just part of the fun. The formula is easy: the more upset I get, the more fun he has.;D

After going through a can and a half of propellant on just my Dreadnaught alone, I realized that I had to bite the bullett and get a compressor now. I found a really nice airbrush compressor at harbor Freight for only $79, which is a really great deal when you compare it to other airbrush compressors out there. This one has adjustable air pressure- most others don't- which was a big selling point for me. It'll be arriving this Saturday. I can't wait to switch it on so I can use it to basecoat my Space Wolf commission pieces.

I live in an appartment and I do all of my airbrushing in a bathroom. I have a stool setup and a small fold out table for the work. I wear a respirator, use a hepa filter and run the exhaust fan continously. But I only spray acrylics.

And as for the compressor. Spending any money on an aircan is a complete waste of money.
You can use compressed canistors if you have a place, say work, that you can fill them.

There is an adapter piece that can attach your airbrush hose to a spare tire.
So instead of paying for canned air just run down to your local service station and refill it. I know it's not a permanent solution but will do in a pinch.
I know some artist use compressed air in tanks from Welders Supply places. They get the half tanks and a regulator. The tank can last 6 month to a year depending on how much you use your airbrush.
Some stop gap solutions but in the end a compressor works the best.
