I\'m confused

I posted a pic of my newly painted Space Marine Sergeant and so far its only gotten a score of 4.7, isn\'t 5 tabletop standard? and if so why is mine considered to be below tabletop quality?

If there are any reasons why he is not up to standard can you please please please point them out so i can fix them and improve my quality of painting.

Oh and how do i post more than one image on CMON without needed to submit them separately?

Anywho, I\'ve seen this mini before, and voted a 5, meaning it IS table-top quality. But you have to take the CMoN ranking system. with \'a grain of salt\' (a popular expression on these topics), as people want to see display miniatures. Basically, if it is not painted higher than table-top quality, they will likely not care about the gap between voting a 3 or a 5, which is why yours is likely lower.

That\'s my guess, and if you have anything from 4.5-5.4, simply round it off to be at 5, in other words, table-top quality.

First off - 5 should be tabletop standard but the voting is subjective. The photo is blurry towards the edges. Some shading would be nice. The judging around here is pretty stiff. Our version of table top is a far cry from what you would actually find on a tabletop in some places.

Secondly, you would be more likely to get a better response in the discuss submissions thread. (Pimping your mini in that section will usually result in a fair number of comments and votes rather quickly)(Curses - I took to long to type and got beat out)

Finally, multiple shots of the same mini can be submitted together using something like photoshop or gimp. The idea is that you would open multiple pictures; cut, copy and paste; and then save it as one collage. Then submit that to CMON. Do not just submit 8 pictures with different views as different submissions. It just makes people angry.

Ok, thanks for the responses guys. The point you made about \"people want to see display miniatures\" is a good one and i understand that most people come here to see extremely well painted minis, so i can see why people may not care much about minis such as mine.

Sorry for posting in the wrong section i\'ll try and think about where i\'m posting a bit more before i hit create new thread. Oh and thanks for clearing up how to post multiple pictures i\'ll try that some time.

Personally, I love seeing mediocore figures if the artist updates every once in a while and starts to show progress ala Thecadian. Keep it up and may I suggest trying your hand at a display mini or two?

Thanks for the help guys, i\'m going to start painting up a sergeant for a painting comp on the relic forums once it starts in a week or so and i\'ll post him up once im done. I\'ll put up some pics of my dreadnought or something in the mean time.

@ardaeus: Having looked at your figure I have to say that there is nothing \"wrong\" with the painting of this miniature. It is of a standard we are used to seeing as gaming pieces and there is nothing wrong with that.
Improvements such as stronger defined shadows and greater extents of colour highlights will help.
As has been suggested please put Works in Progress up in the WIP forum as there are many people who will make suggestions. (Some of us will even be helpful. )

On a serious note i agree with DR. I improved lots since i found Cmon. Posting in the wip section is always a good thing.

I\'d say you mini is a 5 btw

the short answer is: most here have ridiculously high standards for tabletop.

My only crit is the eyes, which would look better if they didn\'t spill over the edges.
Otherwise it\'s all well done, just looks like you\'re ready to take the next step and extend your highlights and shadows.

The problem is definately the picture. Don\'t think of it as we vote on the objective miniature but more on a package where the photo + layout is important too. you aren\'t showing the entire miniature with these shots.

I consider it a 5 though. 2 things for improvment and maybe a 6: definition of details like lining of eyes and gold. Secondly some more details to the black.

As for tabletop.. as I mentioned in another thread. 3 colours + basing (ie. some tournament rules) is hardly a way of describing what goes into a 5 miniature. If you take it literary and apply the tournament rules that is all it is to it. What defines a 5 is always up for debate and that\'s why scores differ. My guess is for example if you put 5 of these together and put them in a squad then it will score more towards 6.

But the real short answer is, this is a painting site, not a gaming site. If you think about it there is a huge difference.

I just think of four as the new five. Because, really, the bar has been raised so high now that there needs to more of a range between tabletop quality, and godlike.

Tabletop quality is really a subjective term...
Green looks flat, and yellows spots look thick and a bit slobby... but it\'s nothing to feel concerned about on a tabletop; in pics, it shows big-time. If you want to do better, you got every ressources at mouse reach. And you will need patience... lots of it.

Edit: Oh, I might be the only one to do that, but whenI see a \'left side\' ,\'backside\' or \'under the left foot\' shot, I automatically vote a point less, and less if it\'s the second or third pic I see of the same mini... by the time I would get to the left shoulder pic, I would vote it 2

things to work on to improve:

brush control, the yellow eyes are bleeding out onto the helmate.

shading and shadowing, the is a faint attempt at a highlight along the edges. I did not say bad (look at my early submissions for bad). Thin some dark green down to very watery and apply it to all the dark recesses - this will give the mini some depth. Then come back with thinned paint and apply the highlight. A bit of thinned very dark green drawn in the panel joints would also help (darklining).


The base could stand a bit of drybrushing to bring the texture of the gravel out, but you did base the mini so that is a plus.

Finally and most importantly, your photo skills need to be very sharp to get good scores around here. If we cannot see it, we cannot vote on it no matter how well it was painted.

Read the articles sections - specifically the eyes by Cyril and the photo workshops to increase your depth of field (smaller aperature or move back and crop the pic).

Hang in there. As you paint, you find some of these techniques become easier to the point you don\'t even think about shadowing any more, you just cannot paint a mini without doing it. But it takes time in the painting chair.

Tabletop? Yes, better than a lot of local tabletop standard out there (can of krylon red for the blood angels, etc.)

Thanks for all the comments guys they\'ve really helped. I\'ll check out some of the tutorials as some of you suggested and try to get highlighting and shading going. As some of you pointed out my brush control is not that flash mainly due to being slightly shaking and my brushes being pretty bad.
