Supervike was right, I was commenting on Thecadian\'s improvement from a mediocore painter to an above-average painter.

Nothing much to add to what\'s been said - good tabletop standard and excellent foundation on which to build etc.

Mainly I just want to say \"hang in there\", you\'ve made a big step by joining this community. Voting standards are high but we don\'t judge people on their scores but on how well they react to comments and advice etc. I\'d say you\'ve made a great start there too, showing a willingness to improve and listening to a lot of input. We\'ll all be watching your progress with interest and hope to see some of your work in the WiP forum. Good luck

Paint mainly for gaming myself. If you take up a few of the hints here(from people who really knows how to paint) like a bit of shading and a bit more highlighting you\'ll also see your army presenting it self a lot cooler  on the battlefield - counts a lot to me.

My point is that it\'s Tactless to call anyone a mediocre painter , or even to single out one particular painter regardless of how far they have progressed.
We are all seeking to improve with each model painted.

Bah, each of us has a ranking that can be accessed by anyone. This is a site that asks two basic questions: How well can you paint? and How well can you photograph what you\'ve painted?
Those of us who are mediocre are well aware of the fact. Whilst I do agree that in normal circumstances it is rude to call someone mediocre, in this instance I would be proud to have my name at the end of that sentence. If I could take a decent photo, it could be. Though I would be just a less mediocre painter and probably not above-average.

Here are my thoughts, take them for what they are worth.

The notion of \"table top\" quality being 5 is a guide. Then again what is exactly table top quality? This too is in the eyes of the beholder. I think most people think \"this would look real good on a gaming table\" is 5 and so a lot of thing you would see on a table top might not get that score because they only look mediocre on the gaming table.

Second is the fact that there are people out there who give low scores. I would say deduct .5 from what you think the score should be just because.

Third is that the only way people see the mini is through the photograph and first impressions are not just important they are everything! A not perfect photograph can subtrct .5 from the score; a bad one 1 point or more.

Finaly remember the Attaboy/Dumb Shit ratio, a thousand good things equals one mistake. My first impression on the yellow eyes; a little darklining around the yellow would do wonders for the score. Then there is the mostly undone base which annoys a lot of voters.

For what it\'s worth, I gave it a 5

I paint my thumb.
I think there is no average painting standard here anymore... CMON is a community based on well above average painters, our tt standard is a unnatainable objective for many of the gamers-gamers, and what we call mediocre is really average for the outsider or any normal folks...
I am/was a mediocre/average painter, but still in real life I am the best I personally know, since not many painter reside in my area; amd the people I paint for consider it\'s great stuff.

Nobody should feel bad about not painting display quality mini... tough it\'s what we got to expect here.

If the base appears to be unfinished...what can i do to improve it? the sand was painted choas black and a stream of lava was painted through the middle, im not sure what kind of highlight i could add to the black area to make it look any better. Any help with that would be great. Oh and i tried to blackline the eyes and im not sure whether it was a success or not...i\'ll post up a pic when i get a chance.

I joined Cmon yesterday and posted my first pick today. Of course I knew that here the standard is high and the mini has to be really awesome to get high scores. Still I was a little shocked when I checked my average score for the first time.

You can find the mini here:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/150371

Average is now 4.3, luckily it can improve fast because it only has a cople of votes :D. But What do you think? Is it worth more than 4.3 points?

The most confusing thing must be that \"tabletop quality\" ´cause I honestly think this mini is at least tabletop quality :D

The good thing is that now I have a lot of room to improve my score.

No doubt about it, the standard here is WAY higher than many other painting communities. And yes, it\'s a painter\'s standard, not a gamer\'s standard. So if your gaming minis are rated 4 here, they\'re probably look just peachy on the table :) If they\'re 5\'s, they probably look better than the other guy\'s army. After all we look at minis here a LOT more closely than they\'re really meant to be looked at!

Dr. Aven: your mini deserves better than a 4.6 - it\'s at least a 5 since you painted neatly and made a respectable go at shading and highlighting. Some colours still seem flat, including your metallics. Yes, you do have a lot of room to improve your score, but you also seem to have the skills to do it :)

Thanks for encouragement, I think I just stop crying and start painting :)

@Dr. A

The mini does not seem too bad. The blue cloth really does not go with all the earth tones of the rest of the mini.

Your lighting rig is lacking, the base is underlight and looks muddy or over washed because of it.

Overall, your light is too harsh or you need to invest in some dulcoat as there is a shine on the mini that is distracting.

Finally, some competitions want the mini to be front/back and the photos to be side by side. Here, the limit is the number of megs and the width of pixels, it can be as tall as you want. Try widening the pic and stacking the two views vertical to give us more details to view/vote on.

And it would not have been inappropriate to have started a new thread for your review but highjacking threads is a fine art around here so you are already fitting in fine.

My overall first impression of this mini is a 6. Not bad, but you will do better as you learn.
