First, take a look at other topics in the forum, this one has come up before multiple times, so take a look at what people had to say about it.

Second, the most impotant feature is the macro function. Pictures of miniatures must be taken in this mode because they will be out of focus otherwise.

Other things to think about include whether you will use the camera for anything else or not. If you aren\'t going to use the camera for much else, a 2 MP camera is probably enough, because you don\'t need super-high resolution for the web. You only need more MP if you\'re going to print out lots of pictures of large size and resolution. Of course a 2 MP camera is fairly cheap these days.

Now I am going to recommend a brand of camera, and that is the Nikon Coolpix range. This is because the Coolpix cameras have a very good macro function, and allow you to get very close to the minis when you take pictures and not lose focus. The macro function is good to as close as 2 cm I believe (I can basically get the picture to the point where I can take an in focus picture of half the mini - top half or bottom half only).

Anyways, hope this helps, there will be different opinions on this issue, but the important things to remember are Does the camera have a macro function, and what is the focal distance in the macro function? and How many Megapixels do you really need? and of course How much are you willing to spend? As an idea to price I wandered over to amazon. The 2MP camera is only $189, the 4MP camera (which is the one I own and has worked well for me) is $350.

I own a Minolta Dimage Z1 (3.2 mp)
My advice (I\'m not very experienced with digital cameras, but I\'m going to try to help anyway):

crucial:

- macro function
- manual flash (so you can turn this off)

important, but not necessary:

- variable shutter times (manual)
- manual aperture setting

IMO 3 megapixel is enough.

another thought...

Find a camera with all the requirements that you might need.

Before you buy it, post a thread telling what kind of camera you\'d like to buy and ask if any users have that kind. Better still, is to ask the CMON users to list a few of the links to some of their own postings USING that camera.

But, also understand some of these fine folks are good enough at photography they could make a Polaroid Instamatic take a good photo!!

Warning : this post contains a few untruths

What you need is either a scanner, or if you can afford it, a webcam. Webcams are perfect because of their resolution (easily 320*240), their image quality - especially color definition - and of course, their focus. Just remember to take a pic from far enough away, and with the webcam in movement, so that the pic isn\'t too sharp (else it\'ll look fake ; better have the edges just a trifle blurry).
Don\'t use Photoshop or other image-editing progams because it\'s just cheating - might as well draw the pic you wish you could get if you\'re going that way. Finally, post enough angles of your mini (a dozen should do), and name each one \'another mini\'. Who cares about the fluff, we\'re here to vote on actual painted minis for Christ\'s sake !
