Yikes!

I have got a lot of books, but that isn\'t going to help you:(

Also, there isn\'t really that much history involved. People originally painted miniatures for wargaming, and then along came people like Reaper, Citadel etc in the late 70s/early 80s.

The history is as much technical as anything and the move away from enamels and oils to acrylics.

My advice would be to make it up:D It is unlikely anyone you are presenting to will realise:flip:

...uh...i dont know if that will fly, being that my prof. is a dedicated Wargamer and a Magic the Gathering player

i figure i want to discuss
- history, like the meire (sp?) family
- publicity like Harbringer and White Dwarf
- different major people in the field
- my personal experiance

and anything else i can come up with that would tie in to miniature painting.

I will look at my books and see if there is anything relevant that could be scanned..

Metal (tin) miniatures already exist for ages, so you might find some info about that.
Railroad modelling is another aspect of the hobby that already exists for years.

You know what\'s so difficult when taking a subject like yours, it\'s that there\'s simply too much information available, and you don\'t know where to start :)

Anyway, good luck and if you need some more specific help, then please ask :D

there is alot, i have to think about narrowing it down to what i specifically want to talk about, but i figured id throw up my \"feelers\" and find out what you all know, and if there was anything i could use that i was previously unaware of.

thanks guys!:D

I might have something....

I have just found a book \"Heroes for Wargames\" which has an introductory chapter. I have scanned the first page as a Word document. Remind me of your email and I will send it. If it looks promising I will scan the rest of the section.

I am not here, I have not said this...there is absolutely no breach of copyright taking place:D

History of miniature painting? Hmm, perhaps you should split it up in history of miniatures and then the development of paint techniques.

Here are some sites on the history of miniatures (and wargames which is closely related)
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~beattie/timeline2.html
http://www.hmgs.org/history.htm
http://theminiaturespage.com/ref/minigide.html

As to the painting techniques, some things to check out (no answers from me I fear):
- When the figures were just playing figures they were painted like the old tin soldiers. When did decorative painting on minis start. In what way was this influenced by the 54mm and larger figures where this was more common.
- When and how did special techniques like dry brush and washes become popular. Did they originate from scale modelling where these techniques have been used for a long time already.
- When did blending become popular?
- When did the switch from oils/enamels to acrylic paints happen (in 1992 the French issues of the Dragon magazines still had articles on painting in oil, enamels as well as acrylics, even though acrylics was becoming \"standard\" for the rest of the world.)? And who was reponsible for this. What influence did the industry have on this and when were the first acrylic miniatures hobby paints sold. By the way, i think Tamiya must have been the first to release a hobby acrylic. The 1982 catalogue is the first one to list them. They never become popular for minis though. They did make acrylics more popular with hobbyists.
- More recent influences: NMM (popularised by Rackham) and the other technique with the horizon of which I forgot the name.

Perhaps it\'s an idea to ask some of the veterans like Tom Meier. Perhaps an idea for an interview? Here is his forum. http://www.thunderboltmountain.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1

All I can think of right now. Good luck.

agree! also, who wants to read another paper on acting! Besides, writing on a subject the teacher is into is often a way to get the grades (unless you\'re completely wrong, in which case you still get the grades, just not the good ones)

tom meier... the man who basically started sculpting...right?
Not quite. He\'s the person who found out that green stuff was well suited for sculpting. Here is a short bio:
https://www.thunderboltmountain.com/bio.html
Sculpting minis is a lot older than that. They were sculpted in putty and even carved from lead at the start. Best to ask the sculptors who were around at the time (I\'m sending a private e-mail on that).

There was an interview in Harbinger a while ago. You can contact him through his site.
