ok, showing my age here, but there was a time if I was brat in class all the teacher need do was call my parents and then there was "hell to pay" at home

It is a sad but true fact that most of the time the parents will take the side of their (wonderful) child and the "hell to pay" is for the teacher. That's why I approve of corporal punishment ... for the parents!

Mmhmm, sad but true, my mrs was walking to meet me after work few weeks ago with our 2year old walking and the baby in his pram, this kid about 10 she reckoned was outside the cinema she passes with his parents, swinging a bag with coke in back and forth, kid saw her comming and stopped swinging, as my lad passed he swung it out again and my mrs flung her arm out to stop it hitting him, she said "careful" or "watch it" something like that to this kid and his parents, having stood WATCHING it happen kick off at her, she said there was no chance it was an accident as he stopped and watched as they approached then he flung it out on purpose, ofcourse the sun must shine out this kids arse 'cause his parents had a go at my mrs. If my kid did that and I watched it, he'd of been made to bloody appologise after a swift one round the wrist. They say kids these days but alot is the parenting, or lack of. I'm moving away from civilisation to a log cabbin with a dog and a gun.

And these "idiots" will be the ones living off benefits complaining that they cant get a decent job because companies have to import labour just to get workers with decent qualifications (I am working in Indonesia now and every kid is doing all they can to get a degree and get work in a 1st world country)

I home school my kids with my wife. It is a lot easier to maintain control with the promise of a quick swat. (We love homeschooling by the way but your choices of curriculum goes down significantly if you are not willing to deal with religion.)

My favorite teacher had few rules:
Rule #1 - do whatever you want but do not disrupt my teaching or others learning. If you want to make noise do it in the office.
Rule #2 - I am responsible for you for the hours of x to y, don't get me in trouble.
Rule #3 - You agree right now that your failure of this class is your fault if you should happen to fail. I will work with you to pass if you want to pass but if you just want the grade you will have to earn it.

I happened to meet my wife in his office.

IF you lean towards architecture and CAD as your form of art, the Aerospace industry, Boeing, is always looking for competent designers.

Really what DID happen to society?! All you have to do is look at me and then my 20 year old siblings. 6 years difference but worlds apart. I am responsible, have a 13 year work history, own a house, own a car, owned several dogs (now down to one) have several degrees and love education, and a certain sense of pride, self respect and a good work ethic.

My siblings--barely able to make it to one class at community college, both sponging off the parents right now, not paying for anything, completely irresponsible and wonder why they turned out so differently?! Something happened between my generation and theirs (and the ones following theirs). By the time I was there age I was living on my own 2000 miles away from home, had been paying for my car and insurance for 4 years and even had a job working for the government two summers in a row (not as an intern but paid with bennies). My sister keeps getting fired from jobs and not really sure how she keeps getting new ones. *sighs*

It makes me frustrated and sad for the future. My heart goes out to all teachers. Y'all are saints! What you guys have to put up with between horribly behaved children and then parents who don't take responsibility for ANYTHING, especially not how their kids turned out.

Ubie and any other teachers on here--You have my utmost respect.

i dont deny i have little patience left for public education. i am considering home schooling my children at this point. i just got my app in at the art institute of indianapolis. if i can make it till may and get a job there im sooo frickin done. personally i would much rather do construction or even work fast food than doing this. but money is what keeps me here for now. construction pays less than my teaching, and i know little of the trade, and we all know fast food sucks. idk...just tired.....very very tired.

I was a sub for a year and that’s all it took, for me to realize that we are all doomed….

This is a bit of a generalization, but we have created a society of entitlement, which believes Government will solve all our problems, though more regulation and less personal responsibility. Remember the “Child Abuse” craze of 20 years ago, when parental discipline was seen as an anathema, well now we have the children raised in that era producing there own children, and we are all going to reap a bitter harvest.

Parenting skills, are learned though example, and taught thusly, but I have seen in the children today, there is no respect for others, or courtesy. The concept of responsibility or even honesty is replaced with, what I can get away with.

screw him and his life. i already know where he's goin. jail by 20.

Teenagers can be a real pain in the arse, but you have absolutely no idea what this kid will be doing when he's 20. If you start writing kids off like this because they're lazy, cheeky and eating sweets in your class then it's time to find another line of work.

The 'we're all doomed!' brigade are well off the mark. How would you feel if your elders, those who should know better and were supposed to be guiding you, wrote off your generation at every opportunity they got? No wonder there's an air of nihilism about our kids....

i however am not responsible for their grades in other classes, getting in trouble out of school, behavior issues in and around the school, their general well being as a student.

In the UK, pretty much every teacher has a pastoral role in addition to teaching their discipline - form teacher, head of year etc. The things you mention there were absolutely my responsibility for those kids in my form. If they misbehaved in other teachers' classes, they got put through the wringer. If I felt their grades were falling below where they should be, they got put through the wringer. If they were caught doing stuff they shouldn't have been between home and school, they got a hammering. If they were having issues at home that I got wind of, I'd try to help. The kids that used to do my art lessons were just kids I taught, the kids in my form were MY kids and I felt a personal responsibility for them. Kids need this.

It's also worth bearing in mind that behavioural issues can be caused by a good many disturbing underlying factors that you might know absolutely zip about.

@Uber

ok...stop right there: You´re telling me that you actually offered that sugar loaded brat a legitamate way out of doing your class for 2 years, one that would maybe help to improve his understanding of art, i.e., teach that punk a lesson and he said no - and your school took his side?

Imagine me sitting at my desk softly banging my head against it...

i wish you all the best with that application, as the folks said, college is a completely different deal: motivated people, no ( or at least very, very few) idiots that screw with your lessons ( and they never stay for long ), maybe best of all: If the kids fail your class , parents won´t immediately blame you.

@Shellshock:

Many, Many years ago when i was still a little fat nerdy kid , my class went on a field day. We had three guys who where complete , and i mean complete antisocial retards (think bully, unwilling to learn, disruptive and not able to behave )
who were only allowed to tag along if at least one of they´re parents would join us to help supervise the kids. So we ended up with one of the boys granny and another boys mom coming with us. Now naive as i was at that time, I believed mommy would stop her precious little boy from doing anything moronic - well i was wrong: Her boy bullied me all the time while she was standing a few yards away, doing absolutely nothing. Thanks alot. Oh btw, granny kept her boy in line.

i however am not responsible for their grades in other classes, getting in trouble out of school, behavior issues in and around the school, their general well being as a student.

Ok, maybe a stupid question from someone who never dealt with the american schoolsystem, but isn´t that what guidance councelors and schoolpsychiatrists are for?

you know , people who have the proper training to deal with these issues, just asking.

space munkie: oh i know i shouldnt be teaching anymore. ive made that abundantly clear. :) and thus why im looking for another line of work. as for me, its a job, not a way of life, i think i realized that it today more than anything, when i had kids drawing from pictures and 20 out of 32 kids literally traced the picture. this did not happen 10 years ago. its a state of being for these kids, they want it now, and if its not attainable in 10 mins or less, they should get it for free. but no im not accountable for this kid outside of the 50 minutes hes in my class. i dont care to know about him after class, and as for labeling him, yep i will continue to do that. i have a 99% success rate thus far on calling kids. and on this one yeah hes gonna be in jail. yeah ive been wrong a few times, but oh well. acceptable losses. its sad thats how i look at things, but its how i see it. as for his history, yep i know it all. thats the first thing i did. and believe it or not, both parents well to do and very loving, and have two other great kids. this kid is just an ass. pardon my french. his feeling of entitlement is so high its not even funny. no history of abuse, no other things, scores high on istep testing. plain and simple a waste of space and oxygen.

Have to agree with Shellshock there. All this "PC" horseshit has ultimately ruined the moral backbone of the western world. If someone's being a bit of a dick you're not allowed to slap them back in line and just have to watch them spiral out of control doing whatever they please while some shrink or counseler half arsedly chases their coat tails trying not to step on any egg shells as they go whispering in soothing tones... As soon as anyone DOES take it upon themselves to deal with it accordingly they inevitably end up sued/charged with something or other under the human rights act, or both.
People wonder why the new generation turn out more arseholes than the older Generation? Please...
I'd personally be happy for a teacher to give my kid the belt if they acted up, and when they came home in tears because the "bad man smacked them" I'd find out why and they'd soon realise they wouldn't get any sympathy from me if it WAS for being a little shit. That's called "Cause and consequence". A term that's almost completely forgotten these days.

that kids going to need your art lessons when their painting the letters on license plates in the state pen

seriously if they really think art is worthless tell them they can't have anything related to art in your lessons...which will cover speaking as language is an art, food..yep art too, clothes oh their a big section of art, furniture, music, games anything to read or basically anything that will stop them from standing there nude in your lesson...except that's part of art so they can go stand out in the corridor naked til the end of your lesson holding a sign over what ever they wish to cover saying "this is what happens when you don't appreciate art" or they can stick a crayon up their nose and try and create something remotely palletable to the art community before they end up nailed in someone else's art buried six feet under
