Hi all!
I bought the how to paint the citadel mini\'s book from gw last week. I think it\'s a good book, lots of tricks and tips, of all kind of painting tech\'s. Does anyone bought that book also and have any comments? :]

I had a quick look through a store copy and it seemed to cover a lot of different techniques. Though I think the ordering of the techniques was a bit hap-hazard. They would benefit from grouping the articles according to \"basics\"- dry brushing, ink washing, flocking etc, \"intermediate\" like converting, layering and blending to \"expert\" directional lighting, NMM, freehand, building dioramas etc. Didn\'t buy it as I think it\'d be more beneficial to someone who is newish to the hobby.

I was also looking at this at the weekend and must admit to being disapointed at the quality of the painting being shown.
There are more and better articles here on CMON and the linked sites of some of the artists than are being shown in that book.
One of the things that disappointed me was that there seems to be no part of the book directed to high quality Golden Deamon enrtry standards either demonstrated or discussed. All the figures shown seem to be just \"Tabletop\" quality.
Previous incarnations of painting guides from GW were better.
I know from discussion that Tammy Haye is working on higher quality miniatures, possibly even writing about them. Maybe there\'s a \"High/ Competition Standard\" book to come out?

Hmm.. if thats true I\'d be tempted to buy that sort of book. I agree, the focus was more on technique and was not a showcase of the best painted work. But I think its probably useful for people starting out in the hobby, or those looking to improve their skills. ;)

haven\'t seen it in person

I noticed a blurb in last months White Dwarf about this painting book.

It said it was \"now available\", but I went to my local comic book/wargaming store, and they didn\'t have it yet.

I\'d certainly like to see it, but as I love books that deal with mini\'s I am sure I will have to buy it.....:D

Anybody see it stateside yet?

Dragonreach. There\'s definitely better articles out there on the web as compared to what the book has to offer.

Try the articles in CMoN, Doctor Faust, Hot Lead and Jenova.

Otherwise, learn from those who paints the world war II diorama. The techniques employed by these painters are simply impressive but they tend to have an over-reliance on air-brush (not that air-brush is no good but i can\'t afford one! lol )

\'Bill Horan\'s Military Modelling Masterclass\' is perhaps the best painting book I\'ve seen. Not a lot of tips but a good step-by-step guide and some pictures of the best dioramas from this guy. His style is so realistic as to be absolutely breathtaking, and all in 54mm!

For a sneak peek at the work of the man try http://www.soldiersgallery.com/billhoran/default.asp?cosa=area14&nome=Gallery

Means to an end...

Having not seen this book, I presume it would be a good compiliation for the beginner, putting everything in one place?

I agree that for painting content this site is mega-rich, but having a book is a something special in itself. Books last and can sit on your shelf (I\'m just sorting out my finances so as to buy the CMON book!).

Still, not seen the book, so I\'m hypothesising. Table-top is always a good place to start, as it teaches you the importance of achieving a style and effect in painting, such as heavy contrasting, etc. It then becomes an almost logical progression to work in more layers or blend a little.

I\'ll make a point of finding this book, just because I love looking at miniatures anyways :)

I couldn\'t agree more - the best ref book I\'ve bought recently is the Rackham Catalogue! - every mini they make easily accessible - pictures on their web page are bigger - but you can\'t beat the ease of flipping from page to page when you want to make comparisons.:D:D:D

Only problem is books tend to go out of date as soon as the\'re printed!:(

Thx for all the tips guys!:D

I\'m ganna sort them out, I also got a book from
http://www.verlinden-productions.com
it\'s quite good!
I use to be a 1/72 painter I was quite good in it, tough with that darn 54mm. It feels I have to start all over again:(

I don\'t understand why they\'d get her to write that considering she struggles to surpass 9.0 on this very site.

A 9.0 isn\'t good enough!?!?

Er, how is anyone who can do even one mini that gets more than a 9 not qualified to do a book about High Quality figures? Do you realize there are only 228 figures on this site in beween a 9 and a 10? Out of (currently) 17,701. That means a score of 9 or better is in the top 1.3%, and that sure sounds to me like she\'d be qualified. So maybe not everything she does is in the top 1.3% (but overall she\'s in the top 10%, which I still think is quite impressive), I still think she is more than qualified to talk about high quality/competition level minis. Particularly since, working for GW, she likely has a big clue as to what they at least would be looking for in GD competitions. I think she\'d be eminently qualified to put together such a tome, hopefully its more than just a rumor...

Thanks! that was easy eh? And you\'re right - who is the paint staff at Rackham comprised of? One of them has posted here no? Their stuff really is topnotch paintwise . . .
