There are approximately two billion children (persons under 18) in the world. However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist (except maybe in Japan) religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the population reference bureau). At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming there is at least one good child in each.

Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 967.7 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with a good child, Santa has around 1/1000th of a second to park the sleigh, hop out, jump down the chimney, fill the stocking, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into the sleigh and get onto the next house.

Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false, but will accept for the purposes of our calculations), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household; a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting bathroom stops or breaks.

This means Santa’s sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second--3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second, and a conventional reindeer can run (at best) 15 miles per hour.

The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized LEGO set (two pounds), the sleigh is carrying over 500 thousands tons, not counting Santa himself. On land, a conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that the \"flying\" reindeer can pull 10 times the normal amount, the job can’t be done with eight or even nine of them---Santa would need 360,000 of them. This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh, another 54,000 tons, or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch).

600,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance—this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as a spacecraft re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer would adsorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy per second each. In short, they would burst into flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second, or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip.

Not that it matters, however, since Santa, as a result of accelerating from a dead stop to 650 m.p.s. in .001 seconds, would be subjected to acceleration forces of 17,000 g’s. A 250 pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a quivering blob of pink goo. Therefore, if Santa did exist, he’s dead now.

The thing people don\'t realize is that Santa actually delivers presents all year long. But it\'s done in a time warp that he once explained to Einstein (who then took credit for it and is now proclaimed a genius). He also shares the work load with an elf names Horace who looks remarkably like Santa but is much shorter and another elf named Lilly who, being a girlie type elf, has to wear a big costume. (She hates the beard).They work in over-lapping shifts all day and night, dodging in and out of time lines so that they can get where they need when they need to.


Stop being a Christmas fart and spread some love, you!

Both little ones keep looking around when I tell them Santa is watching, which he is, of course. They\'re pretty worried right now, and really trying hard to not be bad.

I took it one step further. I have this shelf in my hall that\'s right across from my son\'s room. Every year the day after Thanksgiving Id decorate it. There was a miniature tree complete with tiny ornaments from Hallmark and a little red tree skirt. Tinny lights light the tree, their battery packs wrapped up like itty bitty presents under the tree. A ceramic cat and mouse sleep in a basket next to the tree under a teeny weeny wreath, trimmed with more lights and ornaments. Stockings hang near a free standing fire place. Presiding over the whole thing is a 12\" china doll named Holly (my middle name BTW). She look remarkably like me as a child incuding glasses and blonde hair with a braid on one side. She stands facing Alex\'s room, watching while he\'s in there alone and she reports to Santa every night while Alex was asleep as a child.

As a child Alex knew what she was there for. He\'d help with the little tree and putting everything up. He\'d write lists of things he wanted or cut out pictures for her so she could show Santa. When he was bad he\'d go and tell her what he had done and how sorry he was for it.

She\'s not out this year. She\'s still packed away. Alex doesn\'t live here any more so she\'s waiting for a Grandchild to spend the night so she can work her magic again. That will be a few years. I hope Alex wants to continue the magic.

That\'s a sweet story, and thanks for sharing! And one little request from me: Don\'t be too pushy on the baby! My mother actually got to the point of telling me that I didn\'t really need to get married for her to have grandchildren! :eek:

As far as I\'m concerned, he can wait untill he\'s in his 40\'s if he wants. It\'s his life, not mine. He\'s just starting and to get him tied down now would be tragic. No, I want to be a grandmother but not right now. I\'m having to much fun discovering life myself. There\'s time for all that later.

@shawn: every day at school we have assembly and the teachers tell us any notices of which we should know of, and normally read out a funny story or put on a short presentation to watch... Anyway, yesterday it was this exact story, I think it was actually the exact same piece of writing as well. It was really funny up until the point that our teacher said: (This bit is the only different bit)
\"So if Santa did ever bring you any presents he probably died soon after it.\" :(

@junior elf This thing has been around for quite a few years not. Glad to hear it\'s still circulating. How did your school mates like it?

@lizcam When I was a toddler my mom used to call me Bun Bun (name of a sock puppet on my favorite TV show). When nobody was looking she would call me that till she passed a few years back. It warmed my heart. Your son may still have a soft spot for that little tree.
