I really, really feel like taking some time off soon, and head out to some conventions and meet hobby people.
The thing is, I don't know what is what, when they are, where they are, what is going on there and what is good. There might even be cons I know well, but do not consider because I think they are too far away, but I don't know that a two hour train ride can take me there from an airport I have easy access to. Surprisingly many webpages for cons seem to assume that you already know the con, so finding the mentioned information can be really time consuming. So, instead of spending days researching this, I go straight to the best source of info: other con-goers.
I have a few simple condiitions:
1. Easy and cheap access - I can't pay thousands of dollars for this, fiance will simply not allow it. Also, I days off from work are precious, so I need to keep travel time somewhat down. As such, I will limit myself to places I can reach by cheap plane, these are generally all of Europe, Miami, New York and Los Angeles. The better the con, the further am I willing to travel.
2. Support for the brands I am interested in - I don't play GWs games, nor am I particularly interested in painting their minis, so GW-only cons are right out. Cons where many manufacturers are present are best, but for the record, I am currently most interested in CMoN and Wyrd games.
3. Generally English or Nordic language - I want to be able to communicate with people there. I only speak Norwegian and English, I understand Danish and Swedish pretty well and German to a degree.
Other wishes, in no particular order
- Somewhat large. There are small cons here, but I want to go to cons with loads of people and loads of stuff happening. We don't get that here.
- Meeting CMoN people. Always fun to meet internet friends, though this is not a dealbreaker. Could be a dealmaker!
- Painting classes. I want to improve and learn, and classes are hard to come by here.
- Painting contests. While not a must for me, this is a lot of fun not matter if I participate or not.
- Gaming. I *am* in it for the gaming, so being able to catch some games, or even better, tournaments, would be great.
- Buying stuff. Minis, terrain, anything.
- Gawking at stuff. That's the point of cons, is it not?
... yeah. That's my wishlist. When it happens doesn't matter much, though I don't see myself being able to go anywhere until September at the very earliest, probably not until next year. Yes, Gencon this year is right out!
Help me travel, folks!
