Ideas for Bases

I\'m going to be starting a slaaneshy warhammer army. I intend to spend quite a bit of time on it.

One of the first things I\'ll need to do is the bases, I want something that stands out from the usual green grass and mud. I\'m not sure what to do and would appreciate some ideas/suggestions.

To improve the usefulness of this thread feel free to throw in any ideas for bases whether warhammer or not.

Maybe cobblestone all the bases as if on an old roman road or a brick/tile flooer as in a abandoned Mordheim type city. Occasional grasses growing up between the blocks.

Or do all Fall Foiliage

Or worse Spring Foiliage (Stomping on flowers - but just their ugly presence in lovely landscapes might be a neat contrast. )

Im with Corvus on this.
I think maybe something like a living ground (flesh like with imperections and faces/arms pushing up from it.

Depends on the ground

Wouldn\'t little bits of cobblestone under your soldiers, or chunks of running water or molten rock etc. look odd if you are playing on a big piece of green felt?

I did see a table locally that was done up as a volcanic surface, and some of the troops were actually on the molten-rock bases and looked great while the guys who somehow miraculously had grass growing at their feet were freaks.

I would have agreed with you a few years ago, when I would flock even the sides of the bases to \"hide\" them on the table.

There\'s some who take that to the extreme, and base their Warmaster miniatures on little slices of Perspex so that they always match the terrain they\'re standing on. The ultimate, I guess, would be miniatures that didn\'t need bases.

Since bases exist, however, and they\'re not realistic I think they might as well emphasize the personality of the miniature. Two examples crystalized this for me - seeing Necrons based on sci-fi metal flooring, and the LOTR miniatures as they appear in the rulebooks - unashamedly boasting brown-rimmed bases.

Since then, I\'ve come around to the view that the bases need not be representational. Unless you\'re playing a game where you\'re trying to work out line of sight from the height of the miniatures, generals might as well be based head and shoulders above the rank and file, etc.

If you\'re not going to do the conventional dirt and grass then at least make them all the same. Though I still think the cobblestone idea is good so long as it\'s overrun with grass and decay or something.

Yeah, thats cool.
I stumbled across something last night. If you use superglue to stick flock with if you dip it in normal flock and then static grass, you get a cool mossy effect, a spongy base with little strands sticking up. Because the floc takes up space the static grass is more sparse.

ya . . that looks cool too . . .I guess the only reason I\'d not do a Chaos themed base is I always assume they are offensive instead of defensive. To model them on their own territory makes me think they are defending it. BUT, to put it on some one elses implies they are taking ground . . .

Rock and patchy snow is what I like to base with, but I\'ve also done some tropical looking bases for lizardmen as well as standard grassy ones.

I\'d go with the living flore, or somthing with colorfull clouds moving around, like a mysterious fog. Or if you intend oin spending less time, make ash like bases with the ocasional body lying around completly transformed by the power of chaos. :D

i would sculpt lava around a single rock and put ur slaanish mini on the rock. i got this idea from a local hobby shop and they put all these minis on display cases. i always thought that was cool.
