Chinese prisoners forced to play World of Warcraft, make money for guards

By Mike Wehner – ThuMay26, 5:50pmET
It's a common practice for Chinese labor camps to force prisoners to bust boulders and dig ditches, but a former inmate has recently come forward to shed some light on a little-known practice that goes on behind the scenes: virtual labor. Liu Dali spent three years in one such labor camp, and claims that after a hard day's work was completed, he and up to 300 of his fellow detainees were forced to make virtual money in online games like World of Warcraft, for the benefit of prison guards.
The guards would then use the virtual cash for their own means, including trading it for real-world money. Dali claims he overheard guards bragging that they could make close to $1,000 a day off of the efforts of the inmates, none of which ever made its way into the hands of the workers. He also claims that certain quotas were set, and that those who didn't raise enough virtual cash would be physically beaten.
Raising large amounts of credit in online games through the use of multiple accounts and individuals is known as "gold farming." The practice is typically frowned upon due to the nature of the work and the fact that those involved are usually paid very little. The problem is especially widespread in China, where the government was forced to ban the practice in 2009, though it continues to be an issue to this day. Chinese officials have denied the allegations, and insist that because playing an online game would constitute "contact with the outside world," prisoners would never be allowed to engage in such activity.

Interesting!

I think this bit might be important, how would they be completely prevented from talking to players from other countries?

now if wow would do something about all the in-game gold spam and police the nasty banter on the trade chat in my world

I think it's been over 3 years since I kicked my wow habit. Those come back for 7 days free emails have no effect on me anymore, probably cause I know how frustrating it would be to level up the 7 or 8 toons I had. It would take a week just to figure out my talents again.

I've never, ever gone anywhere near any of these MMORPGs because I just know I'll end up like Howard Hughes, but without the money:)

Yeah! That would be the last we ever saw of ol' Finn.

If I recall, you were pretty obsessed with Oblivion IV THE ELDAR SCROLLS.....(my daughter got hooked on that too....)

You wish...:D

Oblivion was brilliant! I spent hours on it, but plenty of computer games get me that way, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Squadron Leader etc. but the difference is that it's a solo experience, which I quite enjoy...I certainly do not want the responsibility of being part of a team which is where I suspect the MMORPGs have their hook.

I've played wow for three years and I really enjoyed. I was in a very friendly and social guild. I had a lot of fun raiding with my guild, it is a very nice feeling to take down a boss with all of your mates, or raiding the horde capital cities. I sotpped playing last year becaus I didn't have enough time to play. I don't get why people are so negative about the game and why everyone's saying the game is so adicting. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed the game and I was happy playing it about 6 houres a week.
good times ...

Because they realise there are better ways to spend life, like in the actual company of people? (Aware of the irony of saying this on an Internet forum :))

Because people have flunked out of school, lost jobs, killed marriages/relationships because they played so much? While this is technically possible with any game or other preoccupation it seems to be more prevalent with MMORPGs because of their immersive nature coupled with other aspects of the game.

i played it for a year. enjoyed it, only got bad my first week. after that, 1-2 hours every 3 days. when it came time for my divorce, it seemed only logical that to save money i could forego the extra $18 a month to play. :) havent gotten back since. i managed to have my two 80 lvl characters and that was all i ever made.
