IG and bolters?

Ok, so first off let me say I know very little about the Imperial Guard as far as rules, etc. So forgive me asking what may be an ignorant question.

However, I\'m working on an IG piece as a tribute to a friend who passed away on New Year\'s Day of this year, as the IG was his favorite. My question is - can the IG use bolters, or at least bolt pistols? I have an old IG codex (2d edition maybe? not sure) and there are a few shots in there of guardsmen carrying bolters...but my brain is telling me that the dang things are simply too big for them to tote on the field.

Any input would be appreciated...

It isn\'t a common item for any sort of trooper. Both bolters and bolt pistols can be chosen from the IG armoury though, so people like Commanders and Sergeants can take them. It\'s also not unlikely that a standard guard would manage to get his hands on a bolter somehow during battle. I say go for it.

My condolences on the loss of your friend. I would say in this case the spirit of the tribute outweighs the army list issues. At any rate good luck and post pics.
