Lol, I actually meant no extra bits of colour on the model where you've not spotted a gap The yellow tape you can see is tamiya tape which I've never had any issues with taking paint off (yet). It's significantly more expensive than the stuff you can buy from diy stores, but personally it's the mutts danglies when it comes to masking things off.

Well. There you have it. Low tack masking tape would work just as well I imagine. :embarrassed:

I've tried the low tack stuff you'd use for decorating before - and it's not that great. It can take paint off and in some cases doesn't stick very well I reckon your tip of sticking it to your face would be useful for that.

No update today as last night I was masking off the front portion of the tank ready for some red paint. Likely doing the same tonight too so won't be getting more paint on until Wednesday I reckon. On a plus point I put it onto my painting station and caught up with Masterchef that I'd recorded.

Blimey this rolled onto page 2 so I thought I'd best do an update

Progress is actually quite slow, despite my best efforts as I'm getting into the 'fiddly bits' area where one thing is dependant upon another which is dependant upon something else. Biggest one currently is that I'm having to do one thing then remove all the masking tape and apply it in a different layout to do the next as we all agree, masking things off does take as much time as painting. It is starting to come together though so overall I'm quite happy.

The first part of the red strips has been finished, I did have a tiny bit of overspray where the edge of the next panel caught some red underneath the masking tape (the rivets pushed the tape up) and I've a little bit of brush work where the masking tape managed to edge over rivets that would be fully red. I'm planing on having a small line of red between the two strips (positioned just behind the front strip) to add a bit of interest and break up the plain beige effect.

I've airbrush black'd the exhausts by hand which has created a "soot" effect round them which I'm going to leave. There just wasn't enough gap for even the thinnest bit of plasti-card behind them and they're going to be heavily weathered so it should work out quite well.

You might be able to spot that I've started to black out the aquila by hand. Bit of a boring job really but gold really benefits from a dark base colour. Thinking about it, it might be better to mask off the aquila's as best I can and airbrush the black and gold on and then touch up the hull colour by hand... Hmm, might do that actually.

The rear flooring was originally going to be done dark steel with brass edging, however looking at it, trying to mask off the various tiny brass bits is going to me more trouble than it's worth, so I'm thinking of going to plain steel.

Loving the great work - i have a Baneblade assembled and ready for paint (as it has been for a few years now!!) and i agree with you its a lovely model to build - i would even goes as far as to say GWs best ever model! im just to much of a coward to paint it! although i may now have to crack on get my airbrush out and have a try - im a grown man i really shouldn't be scared of a bit of paint!! Are you using watered down GW paint or proper Vallejo Air paint?

Iv never tried masking something with the mutts danglies - i have a feeling the mutt who's aforementioned danglies belongs to would be quite likely to bite - alot!

Cheers I'd certainly dust yours off and get some paint on! I reckon it's amongst GW's better models without a doubt, I'd love to have a go at doing a stompa but can't see me doing that unless I'm lucky and find a cheap second hand one. The recent GW scenery is pretty good too but all the fantasy bits I've done has needed filling.

Paint wise I've only use GW so far, thinned to the consistency of semi-skimmed milk using screenwash and sprayed at a pressure of around 15 psi (ish - varies based on the colour). Biggest problem with GW paints is that they frequently gum up the needle so you need to just scrape it clear every few minutes or so - it's not a big problem really. Metallic wise I'll be using VMA though.

Yes, I fear that using real mutt's danglies could cause more damage to the model then masking tape...

Finally starting to make some real progress on this. The tracks have had a dark metallic colour applied along with the cylinder part of the gun sponsons. The rear compartment has had a coat of gun metal which is far too bright and needs to be weathered down a lot (no surprise). I've got two of the aquila's done, so just five more left.




However I have had a bit of a disaster when I was removing the masking tape around the second aquila. As I pulled off the tape it came away with paint and undercoat, leaving bare plastic underneath. I'm guessing that there was some grease or similar on the plastic when I undercoated it and this has allowed some rather large flakes to peel completely off Completely horrified and mulling over the best way of fixing this without messing anything else up. Current thought is to use a cotton bud to wash the plastic with water and then to airbrush Chaos Black onto the tank and then the hull colour over the top. Thankfully it's only thin layers but I might still get a ridge line...

Don't worry about a ridge line afterwards, that's called weathering and will add some nice depth to the paint.

Cheers, a fair point. At a distance it does actually look like a patch of weathered paintwork, so with luck I can blend it all together into something that actually looks like it was intended.

Yeah, that'll teach me to be so cocky with how good the Tamiya stuff is In all honesty it's the only bit that's done it, so I reckon it was a problem with the undercoat sticking on the plastic. Just hope that nothing else does it else I may be swearing...

I doubt I'm going to get anything done tonight as it's the 14th and I'll be spending a lovely evening with the other half - she currently thinks I've not got her a card so it's particularly impressed with me

Blimey a good six weeks without any progress True to form real-life came along and bit me on the bum, however I've thankfully managed to have a good go at the tank this weekend. Apologies for the exceptionally dodgy pics, I'm not sure quite what happened - over half of them got deleted as it looked like they'd been taken through the eyes of a drunkard...

I've got the lascannon barrels to paint on the turret's and then they can be varnished and glued in place (so they'll freely rotate I'll also Vaseline the round pad they sit on). The main gun is glued is finally glued in place too. Once the turrets are done I can start on the oil weathering and rust and then hit it back to matt before doing the mud and exhaust pipes. If all goes to plan then I'll have this piece finished by the end of Easter - who knows I might even upload it as my first gallery piece here!

Lol, yeah the mate I'm doing this for is collecting Vostroyen - I think some of the camo patterned ones are more interesting, but it's his choice. Thankfully the Baneblade transfer sheet has the V logo on

Just can't wait until I can start doing the last few bits - will have to wait until Wednesday though as I'm helping the other half out with her larp armour tonight and tomorrow as she's off at an event over the Easter weekend.

Well I've made quite a bit of progress now. I've done the weathering and rust effect on the tank so I'm largely down to the last few bits. The tracks are going to be "dirtied" up and the bottom element of the tank have a mud & dust effect applied. The whole thing will then receive a matte varnish to remove the horrible gloss varnish I applied to seal in decals and help with the oil washes. The guns need to be "worn in" with some washes and drybrushing, I'll use some inks to create the effect of seeping oil and finally rust up the exhausts, then I think that'll be it!




Further to the above photo's the track wheels have been airbrushed the hull colour and an oil wash applied which thankfully is the last oil wash I'm going to be using.

Lol, yes it's a FW Blood Thirster that I've had for ages (I reckon 2006 would be about right). I've just never been confident enough to start painting it. I started doing the wings but wasn't happy with the colour or coverage - of course this was back in the days before I had an airbrush. With the exception of the whip and axe, the whole thing is cleaned, pinned and primed.

The Blood Thirster was bought back in the days when I was single, carefree and living at home Now I've got a house and (made redundant on Friday) girlfriend


Despite the fact that yesterday was meant to be spent putting stuff on to eBay, I ended up doing quite a bit on the tank. Overall I'm happy with it although I do feel that I went overboard with the oil effect on the skirt hinges.





These pics were actually taken with my phone rather than digital camera (hence the extra-wide pictures) as the camera had run out of charge.

I've still got some of the back part of the tank to do (the whole shrine) but will start off doing the mud & earth effects first as this should tone the lower part of the tank down. I'll also mud weather the rear tread plate. On a positive note, I'm on the homeward stretch.
