Ilyad Barbarian - Update Jan 9th

I read an interesting article on color theory for painting miniatures and wanted to experiment a little more with \"shading\" rather than simply \"coloring\" on a miniature.

I tried to apply practical artistic theories to this miniature, such as shading with complimentary colors, looking more at teh direction of light etc...I havenever done this before on a miniature. Still very much a WIP.

I\'m trying to do all the \"light\" areas with warmer yellows and bones and the shades with mainly purples and blues. Most colors are base coat other than the skin which is what I\'ve been working on the most. I\'m going for a kind of sickly pale skin tone. Here\'s how it looks so far. I\'d love some tips on how I can improve this piece:

On another not, Ilyad miniatures are probably some of the best in the world. Phenominal detail and awesome sculpts. Well worth their ridiculous price.

looks good, maybe a bit smoother transitions at times would help

i cant see it in person obviously so it may look a bit different, but right now your dont seem to have a medium colour only shades and the bright highlight, you need a beige in there thats darker than the brightest but not purpley if you want the skin in a natural skin tone

the medium tone may be showing up more in person than the pic im not sure

Looks to me like you\'re headed in the right direction here - you\'ve achieved quite an artistic element to the skin through the choice of colours. Unfortunately, he currently appears a bit \"zombie-ish\" because of the contrast between shades - the purple is maybe a little too strong. Perhaps a wash/glaze (I\'ve never been sure of the difference) would help bring the shades and highlights together more smoothly?

Also, I agree that what I\'ve seen of Ilyad is pretty damned impressive sculpt-wise.

Ok update on the Ilyad Barbarian. I did the fur and metallics. Actually the metallics painted themselves cause the sculpt was so damn good!

Also did a hell of a lot of blending to smoothen things up as suggested. You\'ll notice that the skin tone has changed from a mroe yellowing color to more of a paler color. Looking at the miniature itself, I think it might just be the pictures :p

This is probably the most time I\'ve spent on a miniature because I\'m constantly trying to learn more about shading and have been paying more attention to neatness and detail. As always comments and criticism are appreciated!

Looking good. I would do some washes on the metals and think about some rust on the armour. The skin looks awesome now.

Definitely a big improvement on the skin - much smoother and real looking - excellent job and well worth the extra time spent

So far so good, the furs and pale skin make him real mean looking (besides the fact that he\'s charging, snarling and brandishing weaponry :D )

Can i steal the skin tones for my own barbarians?

How did you go about them? (i\'d like some details pls :) )

Small update. finished the hair, worked on the armor a bit more (still considering rust and more weathering) added some blood to the sword and painted the base. Still not 100% finished. There will be snow on the base for sure. Still working on the leather straps a bit maybe.

This is just my opinion mind but the blood on the sword I think is a little over done. A smaller spash with some drips IMHO would look much better. Love this model so far tho, great stuff.
