Check your manual for the minimum focusing distance of your camera. Any closer than 10cm at the widest focal length on normal macro mode on that model and you\'re too close. The minimum focal distance usually goes up as you use longer focal lengths on p&s cameras...
Make sure the lens is clean. I can see flare in that image and this will happen if the lens has muck or scratches on it. It\'ll also soften your pics.
The longer shutterspeeds that are needed with the aperture size (small) that you have now, means that every little shake of the camera will have an impact on the sharpness.
Trial and error is king as you get to know the camera and what works for that model.
I think you\'re right avelorn, I just got a new tripod, yet my work station isn\'t completely steady, I have to be careful not to have it shake when I take pictures.
