Impulse-bought PS1

I just bought a Playstation 1 off eBay for £11.50 including postage, mostly just to play Worms Armageddon on :D

Here\'s the description:

YOU ARE BIDDING ON THIS PS ONE CONSOLE AND WHAT I BELIEVE IS CALLED A MULTITAP WHICH YOU CAN PLUG 4 CONTROLLERS INTO, AND 4 MEMORY CARDS, ALSO INCLUDED IS A JOYPAD AND A LEAD THAT YOU CAN PLUG INTO YOUR SCART SOCKET ON YOUR TV PLUS THERE IS A SOCKET ON THE SAME LEAD SO YOU CAN PLUG A G-GUN ALL THAT IS NEEDED IS A MAINS LEAD. HAPPY BIDDING.

Sic...

So it doesn\'t appear to come with any controllers, and I need to get a mains lead. I\'ve never owned any TV plugin sorta console before, so I thought here was a good place for advice!

What the hell is a G-Gun? What sort of a mains lead do I need? And do I need controllers or could I just use the joystick?

Cheers!

~Bill

PS. Are there any other good PS1 games I should get?

I believe the g-gun is pretty much what it suggests. It\'s a gun (don\'t know about the g part though). I played Time Crisis on the PS1 a friend had at uni, which used the gun. A lot of the games I enjoyed were sports and beat\'em ups like soul calibur, I suppose mainly as they were multi-player. One game that was single player was Metal Gear Solid.

The joypad is the controller, a G Gun is just a regular light-gun.

You would have been better off paying a little more for an old style PS2 so you\'d have the option of playing both PS1 and PS2 games, but the PS1 is still good fun.

You\'ll find tons of extremely cheap PS1 games; you can probably find Harvest Moon (one of the best games in the history of the Universe) for under £3 and many are less than £1. The games may be graphically limited but they can still be as fun to play as modern versions.

I remember when the PS1 first debuted - it was utterly amazing; I saw it for hire in Blockbusters and after saving for a couple of weeks to cover the rental deposit I hired it for 2 days and played Ridge Racer. I knew I had to have it after that!

The power lead is just a normal 2 pin job like the ones you use for VCRs. You can probably pick one up at Maplins or Dixons etc. Also PS2 joy pads tend to work fine with PS1s at least they do in mine.

As for games maybe you need to talk to Uber about his FFVII fetish lol

ok

PSONE (the small one the big grey chunky beast PS1) has an external PSU so you might want to check that that is included... if so, as Undave mentioned, you can just connect a normal 2 prong VCR type cable in there.

the Multitap is for playing 4 player games - it\'s a device that plugs into a controller port that then allows you to connect 4 more controllers. Worms is a 4P game IIRC.

I assume Joypad = controller.

G-Gun sounds as though it\'s a Namco G-Con (Gun-Con). Good gun - very accurate. Get Time Crisis and Point Blank - great fun.

Worms Armageddon is great. There\'re loads of other brilliant games for PS1 and they\'re cheap as chips now. Tekken 2/3 is one of the best fighting games ever. Gran Turismo still plays well. All the Res Evil games that came out on it are class. Vandal Hearts is worth a look for a bit of turn based fantasy strategy. Metal Gear Solid....

lol I just realised like 5 minutes after I posted what they joypad was :duh:

I googled the mains lead in images, and it looks like I have about 6 of them kicking around here already for plugging in radios and stuff, so that\'s cool. I\'ll have a look for the PSU thingy, but it sounds like the normal cable should work :)

I\'ve already bought Worms Aramageddon (£6 inc. postage) and Tekken 2 (£3 inc. postage). I remember when they cost about 30 quid! lol I was youtubing all these old games that I remember paying for hours at a friend\'s house when I was about 8 (Abe\'s Odyssey, Tenchu Stealth Assassins, Crash Bandicoot: Warped) and I found I could remember absolutely everything. It was bizarre, all these memories came flooding back and I was like

I\'ll definitely check out Metal Gear Solid and Time Crisis too - I have good memories of them. I\'ll look at Resident Evil as well, and maybe Silent Hill.

I\'ll see if I can get a few spare controllers off my friend. I doubt he uses his any more! Would I really need them for Worms, though? Playing it before, I think we used to just swap the controller.

Cheers all :)

PS. I got my little sister jealous and she says she\'ll pay 50% towards the console and all the games so that she can play without having to ask me first. Result :D

I probably shouldn\'t suggest this as we may then lose you to the gods of gaming but the first version of Gran Turismo is available for the Playstation.

Hours and hours and hours of fun (and frustration!) to be had if you like simulated driving.

I\'m glad to see another GT fan out there. I bought my first PS1 for Gran Turismo. When Gran Turismo 3 released, I went out and bought a PS2. I bought my PS3 in anticipation of GT5 Prologue coming out.

I too am a a fan of Gran Turismo. It really is a quality game even now. Another favourite of mine was Driver (and Driver 2 for that matter). My favourite 2 games of all though were FFVII and Everybody\'s Golf. The original Worms was a close runner-up though, as was V-Rally.

Hi Bill, what games you\'ve bought so far are quality. Here\'s a few more that I have that I love:

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
Crash Team Racing
Ape Escape
Silent Hill
Grandia
Resident Evil 2 & 3
Vagrant Story

Gran Turismo 2 is probably the superior game, I had it, my copy is lost/stolen/borrowed, I need to get it again! I also have lost Abe\'s Odyssey, need to get that as well.

Sorry to be all negative but you really should have bought a PS2. Backwards compatibility and the PS2 has probably the best games back catalog of any console.

Good point :p
Thankfully you can get one for cheap on eBay anyway. He\'s got enough PS1 games to be getting on with though :D

Final Fantasy 7 and 8 are must buys for the PS1.
Gran Turismo 2 if you are a racing fan (and even if you aren\'t i maxed out a new VW Beetle for my wife to drive around).
Soul Blade is the best fighting game on the PS (well at least for me) and would highly recommend it.
really scary thing is my wife bought me all of it. The PS, the games, even game me the time to play on it. Can\'t quite convince her to allow me to get a PS3 though.
We are paying off our house though.

Bit surprised when I read the title of the thread as I never took you as an impulse buyer - you always seemed more \'considered\'. However, when I saw you got it for that price... good man - result!
Never owned a PS one but a would second the recommendation for any of the Resident Evils if that genre is your bag - class games!

Don\'t buy Grandia unless you\'re prepared to buy a PS2 so you can play Grandia 2!! Both of those games had me utterly hooked.
I think Grandia is the game that ignited my passion for animé.

Useless trivia note: In the English language version of Grandia 2 (it\'s Japanese) Millenia was voiced over by Jodie Benson, better known as the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid (way back in 1989). :flip:
