In source lighting... from me--- and I\'m after comments *hint hint*

Hey all,

So, today being X-Mas and all for us Christian or semi-Christian types, I got a gift a little later than usual, and nothing particularly material... some decent paintwork out of myself (and there was much rejoicing).
Here\'s the skinny: WIP pic

This being my first attempt at some in-source lighting, I\'m quite pleased with it. And, I\'d like some feedback, if at all possible. Now, I\'m not posting the pic onto the site until the mini is finished, and since this is such an early WIP shot of the model, I won\'t go into how long that might be from now. But, anyhoo, I\'d appreciate any constructive feedback I can get on the subject.

An excellent effort. IMO it would look better with a stronger highlight on the cranial sutures, to give the impression that the skull is glowing from within though this does sort of present a logical contradiction in that the eye sockets and nasal cavity are dark. A slightly stronger green color on the pauldrons will increase the impression that the skull is glowing as well. A little on the sword might look good too.

As I have recommended before on this subject, you should really look over the work of the Caravaggists. They did a lot of this sort of lighting trick. This work by Garrit Van Honthorst is a great example. Note how all light in the scene emanates from the candle. The proper term for this technique in two dimensional painting is tenebrism.

Very cool and promising! :)
Regarding that the skull\'s glowing so intensely green I\'ll second that you\'ll have to add brighter highlights to the nearby armour parts to get the impression of source lighting.

Have a nice day,
Tobi

good start...

Looking good, but I will second (or is it third) the opinion given above. The impression of light sourcing seems to come from how it reflects on nearby objects, so once you highlight the armor and the sword, the glowing effect should become much more apparent.

I will be very curious to see how it comes out...
