Maybe they\'ll rebuild in another location...

Here\'s to New New Orleans!

The city so close to nice, they named half of it twice....

I think it\'s hilarious....and G dub would have actually done that if he could get away with it.....and if it were not for the fact that Dick Cheney would become president, him getting lynched for the fish would be a good thing....

I think he\'s possibly the worst president in recent memory....

Aye, it might actually been better had there been no warning.

Back up to 265 last year
But by last year, the number in New Orleans had crept back up to 265. There had been 192 this year by mid-August, compared with 169 at the same time in 2004. Adjusted for the city’s size, those numbers dwarf murder rates in Washington, Detroit, Baltimore, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City.

NO crime rate

E) The president was on vacation, what did you expect him to do? Command the storm to stop? Run into an unstable place that could rightly be called a war zone now that people have split into gangs for survival against the other gangs? I\'m not particularly pro-Bush or even pro-anything, but I\'m tired of people blameing this one guy when something goes wrong.

I was talking about governement response in general, not just Bush. But anyway he is the POTUS, he can do anything he wants, and in this case it should have been to get rid of the red tape and get people the help they needed, ie food, water, doctors and evacuated.

Clearly that did not happen, so someone in the government didn\'t do their job. Bush is in charge, ultimately the responsibility is his. You take the credit when things go well, you have to take the credit when they don\'t.

Maybe now Bush will realise that trying to brush global climatic change under the carpet is gonna cost more than doing something about it.

B) It would have survived the storm had Louisiana (Who incidentaly receives the highest amount of money for flood prevention) spent the government money that was given to them for the purpose of preventing flooding, on flood prevention instead of pet projects. The levies did not break, it was the inadiquate walls that connect the levies that broke. (I probably mispelled levies)

Thats irrelevant. Its is plain stupid to build a city below sea level when it is surrounded by the sea, a lake and has a river flowing through it. Its just asking for trouble. They have been given a chance to move on, they should take it.

Just so we are on the same page here...I believe the President is getting a bum rap here.

He may certainly deserve it in other venues, but the way I understand it, he asked the Governor of LA to declare a state of emergency before the storm hit (which she did not). Then Bush offered to bring in help immediately after the storm. Again the Governor delayed. The President cannot just order troops to restore order and give aid into a state without the say so of the Governor of that state. It breaks the law to do so.

But you have a great point Trevor, the government bungled it big time, and unfortunatley it cost many innocent lives (yet again!)

New Orleans is there because it\'s the mouth of the Mississippi, which is a major trade route through the US, and also a major strategic point.
Whether it\'s stupid or not the location that New Orleans stands on is very important.

Besides if all of Holland can do it, I would assume one city could.
However it would take a competent local government, a much more competent state government, and a much more competent police force to make it work.

And just to give you an Idea of what New Orleans is like.
If I were given a choice to go to Iraq or the New Orleans projects for six months to a year, I\'d go to Iraq. Having been to both places I think I have the unique perspective to actually say this.

Check out the yearly death toll in Iraq, then check out the yearly Murder rate in New Orleans, then take into account the size of Iraq and the population. I\'d bet good money your chances are better in Iraq.

well, I think it has something to do with the fact that he\'s got to be the only president to serve two terms that never actually WON an election....

Actually if you look at the college grades, Kerry was dumber, and it\'s shmoes.
When are you going to Yale?

Your area of the country\'s been going to hell in a handbasket for a long time, buddy.

I\'m not judging by his speaking ability, but by everything he\'s done, and I don\'t think he\'s done one intelligent thing as president

and yeah, I know it\'s pretty f\'up around here, but I can\'t think of any other state I\'d want to live in....although way up north has been tempting

I thought it was real at first, what with other gross insensitivities that other family members have exhibited...like what his mom said regarding the war in Iraq, \"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It\'s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?\"

But on a lighter note:

Believe me guys, it couldn\'t have happened to a better place. (unless Los Angeles had fallen into the ocean, but I digress.)

Back when Hurricane Camile hit Biloxi, Biloxi was nothing more than a seedy project area, after the federal funding went to ithe city it really cleaned it up and made it a nice place to live.

To be completely honest, and most of the state feels the same way, that while it\'s a tragedy to lose so much human life, the city itself is no great loss.

New Orleans did not show you what every major american city is like in a disaster.
New Orleans showed you what it\'s one step away from every day.
New Orleans showed you how an inept and corrupted state and local government can allow citizens to be killed in what was a very preventable disaster.
New Orleans showed you what happens when people depend too much on the government to help them.

What is the purpose of government if it is not to help its constituents when the cannot help themselves? I realize that people are responsible for themselves, but there are situations where people have no other option than to depend upon the government for help. There were all sorts of mismanagement of disaster resources both before and after the hurricane struck. I agree with you that alot of the blame is at the local and state levels. Maybe the impoverished victims of New Orleans depended too much on something that was undependable in the first place.

Yeah, I knew he wasn\'t the main problem in this case which is why I said government.

I didn\'t know the individual states had so much power, its nothing like that in the UK and even here in Oz, where there are states, I don\'t think they have that much power.

As for NO, just because you have a major transport network going through there doesn\'t mean you have to build below sea level. The Dutch have realised the problems they have and are actually retreating where previously they were trying to advance. My professional opinion remains that its stupid to build below sea level, especially for residential (a port I could understand, but houses?).

No offence to the US (there are similar places with similar problems in the UK and Oz), but the existence of places like Evil Dave describes NO as, in some of the most powerful and advanced nations of the world, points to a serious social problem.

I think this situation should be turned to some good by highlighting the need to do more at home to protect people from poverty, disease etc rather than going to other countries and killing people at an astronomical cost (iraq). Not to mention spending billions trying (unsucessfully) to protect a handful of people from \"The Terrorists\" when that money could save millions of people from starvation and disease.

Its lunacy, society seems to be smoking crack and seriously lost its way.

Anyway England is beating Oz in the cricket :D

Had he consitently been a propopent of states\' rights I could buy this argument. But he\'s shown no hesitation or reluctance to try usurp states\' rights on other occasions with far less justification.

I do find peoples reactions to things like this strange though. From a professional perspective, if they rebuild NO they are insane. Abandon those bits below sea level, its only gonna get worse with rising sea levels. Anything else is stupid and irresponsible, simple as that.

A) New Orleans is a popular tourist spot of course they will rebuild

Yep - have friends who have family in N.O. and there\'s already talk of how a \"killing\" can be made by developers - buy cheap, sell high.

I find this a little hard to believe considering Scientific American had a large story in a 2001 issue about N.O. Apparently, an \"audit\" was done (at N.O./state\'s expense) to target all the areas/projects that needed to be done to protect N.O. and the surrounding areas. For example, the Mississippi river has been dredged for years to keep it a deep water river for trade boats. Normally, the silt that would was down the river and empty into the sea would re-build the sandbars/islands/marshy areas south of N.O. and those help protect the city from hurricanes. This article listed re-building those islands, etc. as ONE way to help protect the area.

Anyway, all the projects were just too expensive for the city to do - especially considering that most of the people that lived in the city were below poverty level and they just weren\'t getting enough taxes. They asked the federal government for help and yet none was forthcoming.

I\'m very personally pissed off that George W. went through all the money Clinton had saved (\"can we say no deficit\") in just a few years. That\'s a HUGE fact that people just don\'t seem to remember. If we still had all that money there would have been more than enough to help rebuild N.O.\'s defenses.

C) That place is a mad house now, people have been firing at the cops who try to get them out. People are being trampled while getting onto the buses that lead out. Not many cities are willing to accept evacuees anymore due to either overcrowding or the fact that the crimes being comited in New Orleans now (Looting, theft, murder, numerous others that I will not mention) are following the evacuees like a specter and are reaching new hights in Houston and Dallas, where many have fled too.

See above note about most of the people in N.O. being below poverty level - enough said. Basically, it just sucks.

D) The National Guard took so long to get out there mainly because New Orleans was not the worst hit place by the storm, though it has been the most televised.

The National Guard took so long because they were in damned Iraq. But, there were plenty of other options that the FEMA officials should have thought of - even if it was just to bring over MP\'s from neighboring Forts. Here again - the guy heading FEMA is totally useless AND a buddy of George W.\'s - enough said.

No, but you do expect the jackass to at least say SOMETHING in light of the tragedy. Yes, he was on vacation, but he\'s the President for goodness sakes! Of course, all this backlash against the Pres. for this one incident shows you how PERSPECTIVE can play into a situation. It SEEMS the President doesn\'t care - whether he does or not the people of the U.S. now PERCEIVE that he doesn\'t. He\'s a politician and knows how that game is played. Vacation or not he should\'ve done something sooner.

F) If your going to photoshop a picture at least remove the reflected image of the cameraman and the open sea from his glasses.

Well nobody\'s perfect (look under George W. in the dictionary).

Thanks Finn! I personally laughed when I saw it because I can\'t stand the man (in case no one else has figured that out :D ) and I thought it was very fitting - if tasteless.

@Trevor - I had the exact same thought - why the heck build there again! I\'m hoping that the city gets bulldozed so that they can start all over again and if they do build they\'ll do it smarter next time. (Although I have many doubts about that! Greed always seems to win out vs. human needs/common-sense.)

*gets down off soap-box now*
