Ingmar Bergman

So as many of you might have heard. Swedens greatest director of all time has died at an age of 89. Which for me is a kind of \"iconic\" loss because for me he\'s always been there in the cinematical landscape of Sweden like some keypoint to rotate around. Now I think a good way to remember someone is to discuss his or her work. If anyone\'s interested?

I\'ve heard that he actually got bigger recognition in many other countries then he has gotten here in Sweden. So I wonder, do you have any relationship to his work and if so what kind? Has it shaped your views and thoughts about Sweden?

And criticism is of course not forbidden, he has on several occations criticised his own work and I think you can commemorate someone further by honestly discussing his or her work then just make them untouchables.

So any movie nerds like me?

I recognize the name, but I couldn\'t tell you what movies he\'s done.

He\'s directed many movies though the years. The most wellknown I think is the seventh seal. The scene where the knight plays chess with Death is very wellknown has been copied and parodied countless of times

Where Max von Sydow plays chess with death..

He\'s done Fanny & Alexander too it\'s usually shown around christmas here.. it was this year. But in the very long edition..

EDIT: Oh. and he\'s won 3 academy awards btw.

His work never really appealed to me. But then I\'ve only seen his more \"arty\" stuff, like Seventh Seal and Persona and some other film I have forgotten the name of... Oh, and the veeeeery loooooooong version of Fanny and Alexander.

The more comedyrelated stuff like \"En lektion i Kärlek\" and \"Sommarnattens leende\", I can really recommend. There is a kind of humour there that you don\'t expect from the usual image of Ingmar. It has some really great dialogue.

Yeah, I must give the guy a chance.

Just to clarify... I don\'t have anything in general against arty films. But when you do arty stuff it becomes very subjective at the same time. I just don\'t like his way of making arty stuff. And his obsession with music that he had for the last part of his life was fairly tedious, IMO.

She appeared in one of his films, that\'s the only link between them. Apart from them being Swedish and having the same last name, of course...

The confusion is that his last wife was also called \"Ingrid\" so she was also called Ingrid Bergman.. though not the same Ingrid. Therefor she\'s usually refered to by her maiden name \"von Rosen\" to separate the two..

I have heard of him, and the films Seventh Seal and, Fanny and Alexander; but I\'ve only seen a bit of Seventh Seal, not enough to decide whether I liked it or not.

While familiar with his name the only piece of his works I have any familiarity with is The Seventh Seal.

One of the problems that Britain has suffered from is the view that European originated films have only a market place in London or Cinema Clubs in the larger Cities. Hence most of the Movies that hit the provinces (ie Newcastle) were Hollywood (& Disney) or 2nd rate British home made kitchen sink drama of the 60\'s.

i don\'t know many dirctors names, only peter jackman, so i can\'t really comment. did he die peacefully though?

He passed away peacefully in his home in Fårö, north of Gotland (the larger of the two islands east of Sweden).

I must, somewhat shamefully, admit that despite being swedish I\'ve not seen many of his films. I have seen the Seventh sail and parts of Fanny and Alexander, but that\'s about it. I did like the seventh sail, it has a lot of merits that go beyond the obvious iconic values of the chess scene etc.
