Inks

I have been looking at several articles, and they say that they use black ink, is this equivalent to GW's Badab black or is it a thinned down version of Chaos Black?

If it is neither, what's the easiest way to make Inks, and what would be a good brand to get?

thanks

I'm pretty sure Inks are different from paints they are glossier and more transparent. Badab black would probably work, but you can get inks pretty much any wear Vallejo has a few inks in there Game color line!

Chemically, inks are different from paints. They are far, far more highly pigmented than paints, and as Dustin09 says, more transparent. It all depends on what you want to use inks for - for a wash? If so, you can use just Badab Black straight from the pot. Or if you haven't got it, dilute some black paint down, add some matt medium, and you're pretty much done converting it to a rough wash.

A similar process applies if you're trying to make a glaze, except that I would even dilute pure Badab Black before using it for glazing.

Otherwise, if you're just using a black colour to darken a colour, then either Badab Black or just black paint will do. Some context as to which articles you're looking at will help us readers give you a more precise answer.

For ink brands, just use whatever suits your purpose. GW inks are great for using out the pot, although they're pricey for the volume you get. Vallejo gives better value for money, and I find the coverage comparable to the GW stuff. I have never used any other inks of any other brands, although I've heard some good things about P3 inks.

Personally, I don't really bother with inks nowadays, unless it's for a glaze. The higher pigmentation seems to work better for me in glazing. I just use diluted paint most of the time.

inks are more glossy than regular acrylics and more glace friendly than the gw-washes. i wouldnt use inks as a wash.

i mostly use inks of the W&N brand, far more cheaper than gw or vallejo and are great, use it a lot especially when painting TMM.

As per Skel I use the Windsor & Newton drawing inks alongside my old Citadel ones.

I'd be wary of using them as a wash (without an additive as per Gohkm) though as the thick pooled bits can dry with a soft sludgy surface that's useless for painting over & they lift very easily if you are a brush on varnish user (yes, I have smeared brown ink from the crevice in a minis collar, up & over his whole face).

So for now I use them for glazes as they can be thinned further than paint whilst maintaining colour intensity. Also of use for a shine where you want one (e.g. leather) without resorting to gloss/satin varnish.

Cheers, B.
