depends on the mood as well. i too am a metalhead, and here\'s what i listen to when i paint (speed paint :p):

to pump me up: power, melodic death metal, metalcore

Avantasia
Children of Bodom (\'follow the reaper\' album only)
As I Lay Dying
All That Remains
Demon Hunter

for long, windy durations: progressive, progressive symphonic metal

Symphony X
Dream Theater

for metal with \"class\": symphonic metal
my personal favorite: Kamelot!!!!

amon amarth is cool as well, i just don\'t dig the whole \"viking\" theme :s

Barstool - don\'t know which recording you have of Holst\'s \"Planets,\" but my favorite is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra recording with Levine conducting... uber knock you out of your seat brass!
I find the music really doesn\'t matter because it\'s in the background just lingering, I usually just pick a random album and hit play. Most of the time it\'s more classic rock and pop music, and I save the metal for when I\'m running or working out~~

Eh, for me it depends on the mood I\'m in really..

Usually it\'s:

Dragonforce
Nightwish
Edenbridge
Hammerfall
Xandria
Kamelot

Any sort of heavy/symphonic metal.
I also like to throw in some:

Journey
Queen
Most 80\'s rock really.

Classical music I like to save for when I study. :)

Amon Amarth is pretty cool, I have to agree. Saw them in concert last fall, along with some absolutely terrible opening bands like Belphegor :D

Anyway I usually just put on my 5 star iTunes playlist, which has everything from Bon Jovi to Foo Fighters, Johnny Cash, Radiohead, Weezer... tons of variety.

I\'ve been listening to a lot of Metric lately. The new album is pretty awesome, and well worth the wait since the last one.

Werent they with Ensiferum, Belphegor, and The Absence? I like all three! I\'m going to see them saturday with Goatwhore, Skeletonwitch and Lazarus AD.
In terms of painting though, I also sometimes listen to some Black Metal, Dimmu Borgir Gorgoroth, Mayhem, Immortal and Darkthrone. Oh and BEHEMOTH

I\'m a gamer (both miniature and video) too so I like to listen to popcasts while I paint.

Some of my favourite are:

Fell Calls (Warmachine & Hordes)
Iron Agenda (Warmachine & Hordes)
D6 Generation (General gaming podcast)
40k Radio (40k)
Podhammer (WFB)
Listen UP (1up.com\'s video game podcast)
Podtoid (Destructoid.com video game podcast)
Thac0 (RPGs by a number of the Fell Calls guys)
TapouT Radio (MMA Podcast)
