Inspired by Reverends thread ----- Handy computer tip\'s/tricks.

Reverend\'s thread got me to thinking - how many great shortcut/tricks are there for doing simple task\'s on the computer that we are missing? Do you have anything to add?

Here\'s Reverends and a few of mine.

@@ By hovering over the images, right-clicking and checking the properties, an URL is displayed. I copied one of them and put it into the Add Picture option,

@@ Might save you a step - when you right click there is an option to \'save image location\'.

@@ Another handy tip I found out a while back is if text is too small, hold the ctrl button and roll the mouse wheel. Voila!! the text gets bigger.

hitting control and return adds the www. and the .com to a web address

shift works the same but is a .net

f5 usually is refresh and backspace will allow you to go back

If you press F11 you make the browser go full screen. No toolbars. F11 to go back

Esc is the same as hitting stop

F3 brings up the find window

The window key (window logo) and e brings up Explorer (not internet, but my computer).

Control X = cut
Control C = copy
Control V = paste
Control A = select all

Windows M minimises all open windows. (boss key).

Shift F8 or blue Function F8 turns on the projector output in most laptops.

Windows D shows the desktop.
Windows Pause/Break brings up the properties menu for the machine
Crtl Esc pulls up the start bar
Alt F4 closes the currently open window
Shift Insert is the same as CTRL V
Just about any software that you buy has a free equivalent.

print screen will copy whats on the screen. thic can be pasted into photo editing software if you want to show someone what your desktop looks like

Ctrl + end takes you to the bottom of a page instead of scrolling down

Ctrl + home gets you back to the top

and if you want to just take a screen-print of your active window like an error message.

then use

ALT -PRTSC (Printscreen)

and you\'ll cut out all the crap in the background

some versions of windows press cntrl+alt+down arrow and the screen is inverted. I loved doing this to people in my office since none of them knew how to get it back to normal!

Assuming you\'re using the newest version of firefox or IE, control clicking a link opens it in a new tab. Not many people seem to use this, and it can really come in handy when sorting through a large collection of thumbnails.

There are hundreds of \"tips\" when it comes to shortcuts on the keyboard, but I think the tips people ignore the most are to do basic maintenance on your PC. And yes, Mac users need to do it too. Not that Macs aren\'t Personal Computers too.... But anyway, an occasional defrag and cleanup of temporary files can do wonders for performance. If you don\'t use the comp too heavily, I\'d say a defrag about every three months or so is good, but I\'d wipe the temp files at least once every couple weeks.

Oh, and don\'t forget to scan regularly and check for updates.

Also for Firefox ... Ctrl + T opens up a new tab so that you can type in a new web address.

Two others that I have come across which are handy are:-
Ctrl + Tab --- cycles between windows open in the program that you are currently looking at ie if you have 3 tabs open in Firefox it will cycle through them. Works for any program.

Alt + Tab --- cycles between programs that are open. Very useful for switching between internet and say a word document.

in FF/chrome/maybe IE: clicking a link with the scroll wheel opens a new tab with the page without exiting your current page.
