Instant Mold and Resin anyone tried it yet?

Anyone ever use Instant Mold and resin, a slow cure resin using pressure casting? I was wondering if resin will have problems with cure inhibition, though it’s usually the RVT that has that problem

Hi,

what are you trying to mould?
are you using the instant on both sides of an item? to make a 2 peice mold?
if no ( and its just an open topped 1 peice mold ) then ignore my next statement

i havnt used it with resin, but i have used silicone alot, and even a well fitting 2 peice mold can leak if it feels like it.
i would think something like this where the joins are very unlikely to be perfect, would leak like crazy when you try and pour the resin in.

My understanding is that resin is a no-no. Because the resin generates heat as it cures it would deform the insta-mold.

Yep, I just bought some Instant Mold (haven't tried it) but the instructions said something to that effect.

I'm making a working copy, of an out of production mini to mod and practice my sculpting skills. I understand about the heat generated by curing resin, the general rule is the faster it cures the hotter it gets, I can get some very slow cure, 24 hours in fact for the demold, that should be about the coolest resin there is unless I can find a specialty resin about there.

I guess, I will just make a two part keyed press mold and use clamps and mold frame to get the pressure on it, but the hardest part of doing two part press mold was getting the correct amount of putty loaded in the mold. That should be a lot easier with IM since the putty won’t stick to it, unlike green stuff which will bond to it self.

The Instant Mold specifically mentions green stuff on it anyone use Pro Create or magic sculpt with it yet either?

Ive used Pro Create with instant mold & it works just fine. I did find that if you wet the PC in the mold it will rave a film.

I have used both pro-create and aves apoxie sculpt (similar to magic sculpt) with no problems.

Well, I used my Instant Mold to do a two part press mold of an out of print figure, I wanted to convert and play around with. Over all the process was pretty good, Instant Mold did a good job with pro create, but the hardest part was getting the right amount of pressure on the mold using clamps, some of my efforts suffered a kind of flattening, and the Pro Create was a little flexible and not to my liking. So next time I'll go with some apoxie sculpt or even and mix of pro create and apoxie sculpt, because I really want to saw and cut on this figure. Good first effort, but overall I think I should of just made an RVT mold and be done with it, since I have the ability to do so, also I also want to try using some resin that cures in 16 hours very long cure rate means less heat generated in the mold. I have a email into my resin company so I’d like to hear what resins temperature at cure is.

Stupid question, but I'm guessing that the insta mold is fairly solid when set then? I'm just thinking that epoxy putties seem to be fairly substantial to be pressed?

It's pretty stiff stuff, but I knew I'd be putting pressure on it. I made the mold with this in mind. I used one and a half sticks for thickness on the bottom and the same for top half of the mold and used a Lego mold frame and cut in aliment keys. I also used a little olive oil as a release agent, only on the instant mold, not the model. This was, so I could separate the top and bottom molds easier for the first time, since one half was hot, that might not have been necessary, but It was easy to wash the mold with soap and water after both setup. Nice thing about this stuff is its reusable, I just plan on washing with soap and water before each recycling bath, to keep it clean and free of contaminates. As for the pressing I over did it a few times, so there is some give, but then I used a C-clamp and had the mold between two blocks of wood, a little over kill.

My first mold was not perfect, it missed a little detail, but I can fix that by adding a little Instant Mold to the under cuts before the first press, easy fix.

I've used Polyurethane plastic to make casts from silicone rubber molds.

I used normal resin with instamold (Specifically a brand called polymorph). Worked fine. Only issue was it was awkward to get out (Managed to in the end but I could see problems with you needing to destroy the mold with certain shapes).

A little late but i have used instant mold with magic sculpt. Small stuff so far. Works like a dream. The chest emblem and all the little skulls on my chaos warrior including the two for the sword pommel. The way I did it left some excessputty that had to be trimmed like flash but it's great stuff when ou need multiples of something.

Yeah, I think the point of instant mould is to just quickly recreate small simple press moulded details really, make heads, small parts etc nothing as elaborate as full figures. I would use proper silicone and resin to do that if I were you.
