Introduction and a lot of help needed!

Hi,

I should really introduce myself before I start. I'm Liam from Scotland I'm 24 years old. I have been shuffling around on here CoolMini and Massive Voodoo for a few months. I have been looking around on here for too long

I've not painted in Around two years although I have finally started painting again, I'm not usually too impressed with my own work and a lot gets disgarded and that's usually why I give up! Trying to turn that around this time, Stick by it and try to progress.

And what better way than to make a thread...show my work... and get some tips advice and make friends in the process?
I would like to make some friends on here. I have no friends IRL who like to paint miniatures and I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to joining local groups

SO it would be nice.


I'm a bit embarrassed about posting my pictures but its the best way to gain some advice and help...

OK So heres the Daemonsmith. Its very much a work in progress.

Im pretty happy with the gold and the silver so far (i guess)
**Please bare in mind this is just the basecoat for the red armour...havn't even started on it**

The same goes with the loincloth thing he wears its just a base coat.

Pretty happy with the face too apart from the shiny bit -_-.....

Welcome to the forum. Looks a very good start, you may want to push the face highlights a bit further on the bridge of the nose cheeks and brow ridge. The gold also looks good but could also do with another highlight on the edges to push the contrast further.
There is some excellent painters on here that are always willing to share there knowledge, you may want to check out there threads, people like tenball, andyg, tommy soule, milosh, skellettes, and megazordman to name a few. You will also find some great articles on techniques you may not have tried before, keep up the great work

Anyhow welcome Liam, where abouts in Jockland are you?

As to the painting well first thing I'm going to suggest is thinning your paints, (diluting) just so the detail is helped to be better defined.
You'll find that this means more coats per colour, BUT it helps to get you used to developing depth to the shadows and highlights.
There's a tonne of reference material on here and about on the internet, but asking for suggestions is the first step in developing better skills, what I'm seeing in the Photo's ain't too shabby. I reckon just a few minor steps to be taken to getting you feeling more 'happy' with your work.
Oh and never worry about learning new skill sets I'm still finding the pleasure in learning new bits n bobs after "lotsa" years.

Nice start. You've come to the right place to learn and make friends! The tonal variation in the skin looks great. I agree to push the highlights a tad on the more prominent areas. The metals are nice too, they look worn and old. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see more from you. :waving:

I was going to post this after the first reply. Nice to see more people commenting though. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I may take a pause of where I'm at with this dwarf right now and gather some more inspiration and read a few of the threads you have kindly mentioned! Won't take too much of a break though as I'm sure the only real way to get better is by painting. Cheers for the suggestions though as its always nice. I'll keep my updates of this chaos dwarf on this thread if you guys would like to follow it even better.

Aberdeen, I got sent there by my then work in 1998, on the very day the World Cup Started.
With Scotland playing the first game, whole city shut down at 12:00 noon to watch the match.
Needless to say the job I was sent to do, couldn't get done.

Haha thats quite funny! ever been here since? It's not a bad place but Edinburgh is my favorite. Something else, just something very special about it!
Just out of curiosity, Any colour suggestions one might find interesting for this guys armor? The red is nice but I wouldn't mind trying something a little...different!

Well the red's very muted so I'd suggest working the shadow areas with a tiny dilute touch of purple to increase the depth.
Them mix a brighter red into the base colour and work on small area highlights. Repeat as required.

The photos you've used above are giving you good shadow placement, so use them as reference material.
