Irritated by GW

I find it very irritating that when GW comes out with a revamped army they never redo all the models. It really bothers me for two reasons.

1. To me it is lame to field new great looking models with the old crappy ones that should have been redone but were not.

2. They never seem to revamp the models that need it and redo the ones that do not. Example: I thought that the old dwarf warrior box was a great set with nice looking troop models. Instead they redo them and make them into that crappy two piece garbage one has to glue together with a nasty looking gap where the two pieces meet.

I was just looking at the dark elves and it bothers me that they could not take the time to redo the dark elf lord on dragon. Obviously it can be converted from the highelf one but it would have been nice to have a large centerpiece like that exclusive to the dark elves. I also think that fielding new mages and lords on cold ones along side the older is just ludicrous. Will GW ever redo THE ENTER LINE of minis when they remake an army???

It\'s down to simple economics of business.
Replacing ALL moulds is expensive, only replacing only a few will be more cost effective for a \"Newly re-worked\" army.

Besides there are a lot of good mini\'s you would have, by your expectation/requirement, made unavailable.

If they redid every model we\'d get 2 fantasy army books a year if we were lucky. Its very time consuming for them to produce new models, its not as quick as some people think.

GW also now have a policy of not releasing all new models in the first phase, so you get a subsequent phase with other new models, for example demons will eventually get plastic nurgle demons, and 40k orcs are due for a few more models soon.

Part of GW\'s new policy is to stagger releases so that you get the main \"spearhead\" stuff and then other releases following on a few months later. That way they can keep the lines fresh and maintain a release schedule which interests more people over a longer period of time.

The Ork release is a good example. When the Codex was re-done they released the trukk, shokk attack gun, Wierdboy, warbikes etc. and now the initial buzz has died down there will be another release, this time the new 40k box set with deffcoptas in it. A few more months down the line there are the plastic grotz and rumours of all sorts of stuff from plastic killa kans to a plastic battlewagon.

With Dark Elves there will eventually be a new cold one chariot and probably some plastic dark riders and a bolt thrower at some point. A Dark Elf specific dragon does seem slightly unlikely at the moment because it would mean re-doing the sprues for the High Elf one or doing a new one entirely. It shouldn\'t be too hard to replace the riders torso with one from the new plastic cold one knights though.

Personally this doesn\'t bother me nearly as much as the fact that whenever they put out a new set of rules (army book or main rulebook) some models get left behind. I hate having models that are no longer \'legal\'. Yes I know I can use the \"Counts As\" rule, but that\'s not the same as using a model for what it used to represent.

Armies that they released all new models for (within a short amount of time after the new book was released. correct me if I\'m wrong) :

Necrons, Grey Knights, Bretonnians, Ogre Kingdoms, Wood Elves, Black Templars (with exception to the tanks). I\'m sure there\'s plenty of others.

A lot of the models they don\'t replace simply because of cost, newer ones will be released at a later date, or that the older ones are good enough that there\'s no reason to make new ones.

I do agree with you that I\'d like to see more new replacements released with the new armies. Mainly because I get a little obsessive with all my models matching. But I also like a lot of the older figures too.

-Matt

p.s. I hate the new dwarves too ;)

Too true; I know how big a deal it is to have an industrial mold made up, they are very expensive and may not work perfectly straight away (time is money) and that means paying more money to have them set up.

I\'m ok with the fact that they usually only update bits at a time, but I think it\'s bordering on criminal when they replace a good sculpt with an inferior version. That\'s just madness made reality by commercialism.

Just curious, which model are you referring to?

I also think it is irritating that some of the best minis they have are limited edition. Such as the Archeon (I think that is how its spelled) on foot, the chaos wizard, and Harry the Hammer.

Obviously there are minis I like (Vostroyans).

Also I do noy believe money to be a large issue for GW. They pretty much run their supply chain and add value at every level they can and overprice everything they have. They have plenty of profit and I do not see why the big wigs should mind a smal dip in their overpaid salaries to create more minis. I mean what is the purpose of net income if it is not going to the progression of better and more numerous models?

I don\'t know which he thought of, but IMO, the new demonettes are a good example, where the old demonettes are so much better than the new ones. Lots of orcs, as well. Brian Nelson\'s orcs were some of the best!

@ Ritual - Agreed with the Daemonettes and Orks.

I agree with Gilvan. they tell you how you can have your army so we as gamers and collectors spend a lot of time and effort making our armies correct and to a good standard. Then in the next revision, well sorry but your army is technically no longer legal. 3rd ed to 4th ed was probably the biggest killer with assault marines having to be completely redone to keep up with equipment changes, but with the potential changes to Marines in the new codex, I will have to increase all my squad sizes to 10 so i can get special or heavy weapons. Never mind the fact that my squads were in 7 man squads with two special weapons.
From the top of my head some good minis redone as crap (or at least less decent) minis.
Dwarves - Already mentioned.
Daemonettes - Ditto.
Mannfred Von Carstein - Both previous versions looked a lot better than new version.
Wights - The older style with the halberds looked really good, and in the rules were excellent as well.
Commissars - New ones mostly look bad.
Ogryns - Ughhhhhh
Ok apparently i am not thinking much about the bad ones today. But there have been many more that i can\'t understand why they changed them.

Ya some of their minis have too much going on which is distracting from the main idea of the mini. The von carstein which has a cape with a bunch of forms coming out of it.

Ya the older daemonettes are way better. If censorship were not an issue with parents I think those models could have been somthing special.

The new Commissars are sculpted better, but are posed funny. The old models were just plain hideous... classic maybe but hideous all the same :p

I guess I can see the daemonette thing, though I was never much into them. But I really like the new Commissars - I even bought one and converted it to be my Inquisitor lord for my witch hunter army.

I do agree that their limited edition models should stay in print. Archaeon on foot was pretty cool, and I see no reason to make him limited other than to push up the price.

If only buisness was as simple as that..... unlike most companies the overheads at GW at every stage are massive .. and every mini production adds to this hugely so taking a dip to produce more minis doesn\'t / can\'t happen .. and let\'s be honest compared to just about every compay out there look at how many minis GW does produce and release per month.

as for limited edition , I\'m all for Limited edition.. yes it does kind of smack of buy me quick but on the marketing side I understand that a company would want to do a limited run for events or for sales reasons (e.g the subscribtion models) they also add that little bit of a chase for the collectors out there.. The new mail order only minis are a step in the right direction where instead of sending a model through all the overhead steps from production-packing to distribution they can do models that don\'t need to sell by the thousand..

however the one thing that does irk me is when a lot of the special or limited ed minis are just pieces that didn\'t make the range and are of a crappy standard.. If your gonna do a special mini make it special is my thoughts not just another metal marine with tiny legs ,

I agree on the dwarfs .... but Dark Elves I\'m confused .. the new mage and dreadlord are on the new cold ones ?? just metal versions? and the Hydra can make a great centrepiece.. I believe the plan is a new Malekith in line with something down the line campaignwise where a few characters are beig redone...
