Is GW matt varnish still really bad?

It used to be good for me, then about 5 years ago I used a fresh can and the effect was a nasty coat of varnish.

I\'ve heard people say that they produced a bad batch (or several), I\'ve heard that they changed the formula and it is all crap now, some people also say the effect comes from not using it properly (that it is too cold, or hasn\'t been shaken properly, which I disagree with as I\'ve tried a warm, well shaken can on a test model).

I haven\'t varnished in a while but I\'m thinking of getting a can of varnish tomorrow, but if I want testors I\'ll have to mail order it, and I\'ve found valejo and humbrol to be too glossy (I thought revell was ok, but someone told me it eventually goes yellow).

I wouldn\'t touch the GW spray varnish with a barge pole to be honest.

I have been using the Vallejo Matt spary varnish for a while now and find it perfect, not glossy at all. I recently did a commission and did 3 coats of the Matt and you couldn\'t tell anything had been sprayed on there.

I had a can of the Citadel varnish a year ago that turned a dark assassin into a glob of white gue :flame: ... but since I haven\'t had any problem even in cold air (but I do shake the can a few seconds). I usually spray the stuff in 3 goes :

1) top and arround;

*** wait 15 minutes ***

2) front and underneath;

*** wait 15 minutes ***

3) back and underneath.

*** wait one night before playing/handling excessively ***

GW doesn\'t produce matt spray varnish any more. The only matt varnish they sell is the paint on stuff. Last time I asked for it the guy in the GW store said I should go to the hobby store across the street and buy Testors dullcote.

I actually find it a shame that GW stopped making their matt varnish, I never had any problems with it. I wouldn\'t use the \'satin\' varnish they have replaced it with - still too shiny

yes, testors dullcote is much better, as the munkie says gw is not worth the risk, too many bad batches too many ruined mini\'s

even the staff at my local gw advise to stay away. i have a can of the purity seal (satin varnish) it\'s ok for gaming stuff as the shine doesn\'t distract too much. \'ardcoat in the pots is great for doing gems and mixing up glossy glazes.

out and out Dullcote is the winner........i think it\'s the same stuff as \'roughing spray\' (what magicians use to do card tricks with.

Well ive only every used GW Matt Varnish, and, it aint good, so maybe it has improved, but its still crap

I dont use spary anymore. I dont think you get enough control and you waste too much. Last time I bought GW spray it cost $15 aud and wrecked any metals (I was doing a bretonnian army at the time)

I use watered down ardcoat and will have to get some dullcoat from somewhere

I\'ve started using GW matte varnish again after years of using other brands and I\'ve got to say it\'s THE BEST. I am NOT a fan boy.I think half the stuff they peddle is utter crap,but that can is worth every overpriced penny I pay.They really fixed it.

I find it odd that you think the humbrol was too glossy, I find its nicely matt.

@ Ogrebane Hobbyco have dullcote someth=imes, but its very hit and miss, I was in the sydney store recently and found 2 cans lurking on a shelf and snapped them up. Honestly though I can\'t tell the difference between dullcote anmd humbrol.

I find that the best time to do varnishing is on a hot sunny day, good job I live in Oz

I was hoping someone would say that. It really was a good varnish back in the day, I\'ll try it again (though I\'ll test spray first!)

Trevor - Maybe the humbrol I got was a bit dodgy. I might experimant with that again also.
